Xanthippe?

Ok so we are currently sifting through baby names and we are probably never going to name our child this (If it's a girl) as I just know that it will be mispronounced and misspelled but it's kind of a guilty pleasure name for us And my fiancee genuinely likes the name (I think we are settled on Cora though for a girl), we are not seriously considering the name but I would like to know your opinions on it.

By the way, it is pronounced Zan-thip-ee. Love the nn Xan too I have to say. What do you think? :)

I love it and love xanthe as well. Xan is a great nn. And I LOVE kimmy schmidt!

duckponds · 07/04/2018 06:14

Presuming this is a joke...

TheRealXan · 07/04/2018 12:29

@AlyTab yes I'm just a Xan. Short and to the point. I've grown to love my name I must admit and I'm very proud of it now

TatianaLarina · 07/04/2018 16:32

I would suspect that she’d get called Hippo in primary and Xanax in high school

😆

I'm sorry but Xanthe is horrible lol

I agree and Xanthippe is even worse.

TatianaLarina · 07/04/2018 16:34

So many lovely Ancient Greek names...

Hera, Electra, Artemis, Demeter, Aphrodite, Phoebe, Cassandra, Alexandra..

AlyTab · 07/04/2018 20:51

Didn't know phoebe was an ancient Greek name? We considered Phoebe too but phoebe from friends puts me off it. Hera sounds nice too actually never heard of that one :)

I adore Xanthippe as a name. Tempted to change my own to it. I’ve trialed it by using it on the Starbucks app. Grin

TittyGolightly · 07/04/2018 20:59

I don’t like Xanthe - it’s not ‘bouncy’ enough. The extra syllable makes all the difference.

Laquila · 07/04/2018 21:01

I know two Xanthes but am not so keen on Xanthippe.

TatianaLarina · 07/04/2018 21:24

Phoebe or rather Phoibe was a titan.

Xanthippe will end up being pronounced Zan thip by a lot of people.

YesThisIsMe · 07/04/2018 21:34

IME Brits, Yanks and (of course) Greeks can pronounce Greek names but all other nationalities make a complete dog’s breakfast of them. (Maybe Spaniards can do it too? Penelope Cruz seems to manage) Viktor Krum making a sweet but doomed attempt at “Hermione” is pretty much the norm.

So probably best that you’re not seriously considering Xanthippe, even though I have a soft spot for it myself - she’s one of those reclaimed “misunderstood” feminist characters like Lilith.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 08/04/2018 08:50

Good name for a centipede.

Grin yes it actually is.

dingdongdigeridoo · 09/04/2018 14:13

I actually think it’s a cool name. But in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt it’s used as the name of a rich girl, the idea being that only eccentric billionaire parents would call their child something so outrageous. So I think you’d probably get generally negative reactions.

upaladderagain · 09/04/2018 14:42

Didn’t Xanthippe chuck a pot of piss over her husband?

upaladderagain · 09/04/2018 16:42

At least she did according to the Wife of Bath.

chocatoo · 09/04/2018 16:47

I love Cora..not keen on Xanthippe ( a bit pretentious, altho could be successfully shortened to Xan), however, you would also be able to buy personalised gifts in the sales with a name beginning with X!!

AlyTab · 10/04/2018 08:55

@upaladderagain really? 😂 I didn't know that but that's an interesting little tidbit.

We do love Cora. That's our top name but we're always open to other names of course 😊

Like it a lot, but I'd never actually use it!!!

GaucheCaviar · 10/04/2018 15:54

It's come to mean a terrible scold, a woman with a sharp tongue. So I suppose it could be ripe for reclamation by feminists, like Jezebel.

Hedgehogger · 30/01/2021 10:46

Just wondering if you went with Xanthippe?
Because I did, just before Kimmy and I’m sure Tina Fey got the name from our birth announcement!
Just in case anyone else is thinking of using it...
My Xanthippe is now at primary school, loves her name and is mostly called Xan by her friends. They haven’t thought of Hippo but I doubt she would care.
When she was born, her cousin misheard and told her pre-school that she had a new baby cousin called centipede.
The most common mispronouciation we get is Xanthroppe with an R in the middle.
She says it’s HER name and she wants it to stay unusual so please don’t use it! 😂

partyatthepalace · 30/01/2021 20:19

I quite like it. nn Pippa would also work.

There are a lot of Coras, and Hailey is v pedestrian (IMO)

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 31/01/2021 03:52

Lil Xan is a a young face-tattooed rapper who chose his name because he loves Xanax. I have seen quite a lot of Xanax-based songs recently actually, I think Xanax might be a 'thing' at the moment.

And the 'thippe' part is just too much! I actually alsl agree that Xanthe is pretty but Xanthippe is just so OTT it seems like a joke name in a comedy with a Hyacinth Bucket type parent and Xanthippe as her daughter 😂

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 31/01/2021 03:54

If I heard Jacob Rees-Mogg had a Xanthippe I wouldn't be at all surprised. He probably does, doesn't he?

PolarnOPirate · 31/01/2021 08:28

Kimmy Schmidt!! I knew I knew Xanthippe from somewhere.

Edenember · 31/01/2021 09:09

Not at all keen, too much for me and sounds medical. Love Xanthe. If you love it, use as a middle name :-)
