Ok so we are currently sifting through baby names and we are probably never going to name our child this (If it's a girl) as I just know that it will be mispronounced and misspelled but it's kind of a guilty pleasure name for us And my fiancee genuinely likes the name (I think we are settled on Cora though for a girl), we are not seriously considering the name but I would like to know your opinions on it.

By the way, it is pronounced Zan-thip-ee. Love the nn Xan too I have to say. What do you think? :)

I like it. It does remind me of Kimmy Schmidt though, but that's not a bad thing!

Habanero · 06/04/2018 20:02

arf at shit tiles in scrabble Grin

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/04/2018 20:05

She was awful, wasn’t she? Her name came to me someone with a poisonous tongue.

TheRealXan · 06/04/2018 20:12

Slight disclaimer that I'm only a Xan not a Xanthippe. Which does only remind me of kimmy schmidt, no matter how excited I got when I heard someone called Xan in a show

Bimbaloo · 06/04/2018 20:13

Good name for a centipede.

yikesanotherbooboo · 06/04/2018 20:17

Ha!
I like Xanthe but Xanthippe looks uncomfortable . Are you a scholar of Ancient Greece? If so there is at least a story behind it. Do you think your daughter would Thankyou for it?

pepperpot99 · 06/04/2018 20:17

Horrible name.

FreetobewhateverI · 06/04/2018 20:20

Sounds like a reflux medication

Awful awful

Please don't inflict your poor child with such a name

windchimesabotage · 06/04/2018 20:25

Could you use it as a middle name? I think if you both really love it then you should use it somehow. There are always going to be people who hate a name and think its weird. People hate even the most 'normal' of names sometimes.... It may mean a lot to her that her name was so loved by both her parents, when she is older, rather than was just chosen half heartedly. x

AlyTab · 06/04/2018 20:38

I do like it, although again I wouldn't name my child it I don't think. No offense to you @TheRealXan! (Even though you're not a Xanthippe). Just wanted your opinions on the name! :)

It's a bit out there I must admit but it's still a pretty name, love the nn Xan too.

Wink No offense taken. Don't often see people taking an interest in the name Xan in any form so I had to join in

BakedBeans47 · 06/04/2018 20:46

Horrible

Snuper · 06/04/2018 21:03

I love it! There was a R4 comedy round about 2000 about Socrates, and Xanthippe featured - I've loved it since!

Never heard of Kimmy Scmhmitt - off to google

As my baby days are over I might save this for the Siamese cat I crave...

toastedbeagle · 06/04/2018 21:21

I really wanted to call my DD Cassiopeia (Cassie for short) but got vetoed by DH.

Not because of the spelling issues, but because she was a vain silly woman and not a positive role model Grin I think this all started after my first childhood crush was Perseus in 1981 version of Clash of the Titans

toastedbeagle · 06/04/2018 21:23

Def consider middle name, I think it's nice to have an unusual one. My friends DD middle name is Persephone which I love, although she's found that people (not down with the Classics) pronounce it Percy-phone

Snuper · 06/04/2018 21:30

Just checked on wiki and the radio comedy was Acropolis Now and it was 2000 (pub quiz brownie points to me!). Loved it! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AcropolisNoww_(radio)

AlyTab · 06/04/2018 21:31

@TheRealXan it's a lovely name. Is your name just Xan on it's own? I could see us using Xan for a girl. Very simple yet interesting since as you mentioned you never really hear of it.

snuper it's actually quite good! It's on Netflix if you're looking for something to watch. 4th season should be coming out soon actually :)

toastedbeagle I actually love the name Aphrodite :D. Way too out there I feel unless you're rich haha.

I kinda love it, but not sure I'd burden a child with it, IYSWIM!!!

pigeondujour · 06/04/2018 21:39

I would love the Kimmy Schmidt reference if I ever met a Xanthippe, but it's pretty obscure. Cora is beautiful.

AlyTab · 06/04/2018 21:42

@IWouldLikeToKnow I know exactly what you mean. That's my thinking :)

pigeondujour thank you! :)

Ridiculous and pretentious Confused

Joeybee · 06/04/2018 22:36

It's horrible. Sorry, but its so hippy-ish, and so strange. It's like zipppidee or xanadu or something. I think only a hardline hippie in a commune or a celebrity would be the only people who could use this name!

RavenWings · 06/04/2018 22:37

I think it's very clunky and ugly. Both when spoken and written!

RedDwarves · 07/04/2018 01:26

Xanthe is much nicer.

I also don't understand how you can like Xanthippe and think Xanthe is horrible.

Oysterbabe · 07/04/2018 02:15

I agree that it's an exceptionally ugly name.
