Ariella - what's your thoughts on this name?

This is our current top pick for a girl that my husband and I can agree on ... we have a very short and harsh surname so wanted something pretty and not too common either.
Also we thought we could shorten to Ella or Ari later on too...
Can I have some opinions on what you think?

It makes me think of Areola.

What about Arianne?

Tortycat · 10/04/2018 11:29

Isn't ariella a character in tree fu tom? Apart from that i like it

HairyToity · 10/04/2018 11:31

Frilly

AreWeDoingThisNow · 10/04/2018 12:38

I know a little Ariella (non-practicing Jewish family)

I didn't like it at first, it reminded me of umbrella -Ella -Ella, and seemed like two nicknames shunted together.

It's grown on me though, like all names once you get used to they being their name it just kind of.. is.

HattieH1904 · 10/04/2018 13:19

I think you’ll have difficulty with others pronouncing the name as you intend it. Your daughter will probably have difficulty getting others to spell/pronounce her name too (so it might be one of those annoying names that constantly needs spelling out)

I like it because I love the names Aria and Elle but something looks off about Ariella. I just can’t imagine someone in the UK with that name, but that’s probably as I haven’t come across one. It is pretty though

harrietm87 · 10/04/2018 13:40

It sounds insubstantial or unfinished to me. Much prefer Mariella though see you don't like it (don't know why that's frumpy but Ariella isn't mind you!).

Aurelie, Aurelia, Isabella, Estelle, Stella are all lovely alternatives, or Emmeline, Elodie maybe - any of those any good?

Tansie1 · 10/04/2018 19:06

So, the 'it's not made up' faction cite Jewish heritage as proof. So, unless you're Jewish, I'm not sure it's a great choice, culturally, tbh!

TatianaLarina · 10/04/2018 19:13

Yeah just call her Elle like everyone else in the whole country OP.

vitaminC · 10/04/2018 19:23

@Tansie1 what on earth is wrong with using a Jewish name? How rude! (And why put Jewish in italics as if it's something outrageous?)

I know plenty of non-Jews with Hebrew names such as Tamara, Deborah, Jemima, Jessica... How would using Ariella be any different?

TatianaLarina · 10/04/2018 19:34

Not to say Rachel, Sarah, Hannah, Rebecca, Ruth..

campion · 10/04/2018 19:40

I was introduced to a grown up Ariella and I thought what a nice name it was. Still do.

It's not complicated or difficult to pronounce or spell. Lovely name.

ClashCityRocker · 10/04/2018 19:49

It's not to my personal taste but I don't think there's any reason not to pick it if you like it.

It's unusual without being too quirky, reasonably easy to pronounce and has good nickname potential.

Veterinari · 10/04/2018 19:52

This thread has some bonkers comments! Confused

I think you’ll have difficulty with others pronouncing the name as you intend it. Your daughter will probably have difficulty getting others to spell/pronounce her name too (so it might be one of those annoying names that constantly needs spelling out)

Except it’s pronounced exactly as it’s written Ari-ella, so entirely phonetic and totally unconfusing.

And the idiotic comments about it being made up (it’s clearly not and ignorance is not a great reason to dissuade the OP) or not using it because it’s Jewish (umm Ruth, Hannah, Sarah?)

I have a friend with this name. It’s pretty, utterly unremarkable in real life and has caused her no spelling or pronounciation issues despite her living in several European countries

I think it’s lovely OP, but even if I didn’t the ‘reasons’ given against it on this thread are weird!

SilverGiraffe7 · 10/04/2018 19:58

I love it. (And thank you for those who said it's a character from Tree Fu Tom as I knew I'd heard it before and it's was bugging me where!!)
It's really pretty and there's lots of scope for different shortenings.

WorryingMeansYouSufferTwice · 10/04/2018 20:47

I think that Ariella is a lovely name and see no difficulties whatsoever with the name.
There is the famous fashion-house Ariella, founded in 1966 so hardly a 'new' name.
Also a literary agent for bestsellers called Ariella Feiner.
I wonder if folk on here would be quite so candid if they were talking with us face-to-face....
I say, go for it!

Daffodils8 · 10/04/2018 20:51

I think it's lovely!

Congratulations Smile

Futter · 11/04/2018 17:51

@Veterinari you have made me laugh out loud! Thank you so much for the support and clarification it's made my day 👍🏻

We are not Jewish we just like the name and it's spelt exactly how it's said (one of the reasons we liked it was due to this fact that our daughter if we have one wouldn't have to keep spelling it or worry about pronunciation difficulties hopefully!)

And although it's "frilly" as people keep saying it's got quite a cool shortened name of "Ari" which I think is a bit tomboyish and then a prettier one "Ella" if she chooses that one instead.

All in all although there are mixed reviews I think we'll go with it so thanks everyone 👍🏻

Good evening,

I know this thread goes back years but I'm really hoping you see this comment. Ariella is mine and my partners top choice for our little girl.

I'm shocked at some of the comments on this thread.

I'm really interested to know did you stick with the name Ariella in the end? I really hope you did.

If you did how are you finding it ? Are you facing any difficulties mentioned in the comments above.

Thanks Xxx

Yes just thought of Areola, sorry OP

Arielle is lovely though

Skeumorph · 24/10/2021 23:45

Frilly, silly - one of those nothingy names which is all vowels and alla ella illie trilly. Just no character to it.

Aurelia
Anna

both far far better choices which are still feminine but also have some strength to them

tiredisnottheword · 24/10/2021 23:45

Just seen it’s a zombie thread!

smoko · 25/10/2021 01:43

Reminds me of Areola

Also rhymes with Mariella (Maria) which is a very common name in my culture so not a fan

Lightswitch123 · 25/10/2021 02:03

It should be nice, but seems to me like you meant to pick aurelia but couldn't spell it so made something up

I love Aurelia though - could you use this?
