Ariella - what's your thoughts on this name?

This is our current top pick for a girl that my husband and I can agree on ... we have a very short and harsh surname so wanted something pretty and not too common either.
Also we thought we could shorten to Ella or Ari later on too...
Can I have some opinions on what you think?

By "this" I meant Ariella is said with a harsher "Ari" sound rather than an "Airy" sound

It’s a bit too frilly for my personal taste but I much prefer Ariella rather than Mariella.

SleepFreeZone · 05/04/2018 09:22

Doesn’t offend me.

littlepill · 05/04/2018 09:36

You did ask for our thoughts!

I knew it wasn't made up, but said that it sounds it. I guess there aren't so many for me - don't think I know anyone with the name. I like the PP's suggestion of Larry. A great shortening, but then I don't like frilly names much and am a fan of gender-opaque shortenings like Charlie, etc.

In my experience nobody suggests the rude versions to anyone's face(s) Grin so I think you would be safe on the areola thing. I hadn't thought of that, but I did wonder if the child might get bored with having to spell it/repeat it. I have a relative called Aurora, another called Aurelia and both get sick of repeating it!

Ariella is not a Hebrew name. Ariel is. You won't meet Jewish people named Ariella. It's an English (language, not country) elaboration of Ariel.

It reminds me of areolas, too, for what it's worth.

lozdaniellexxx · 05/04/2018 13:39

This was my choice for our baby girl but hubby wasn't keen. beautiful name :) xx

ooerrmissus · 05/04/2018 14:10

Sorry reddwarves the Ariella I know is Jewish, and I was told it was a Hebrew name by her Jewish parents. Whatever, it's a nice name, use it if you like it.

lynmilne65 · 05/04/2018 14:32

Just No

Kidslovecucumber · 05/04/2018 14:36

I find it a bit frilly and ‘too much’ for my liking. I do like the shortening Ari though

TheJoyOfSox · 05/04/2018 14:41

Ooops, I thought of laundry detergent. Perhaps not quite the first reaction you’re hoping for op.
I agree with others that Mariella is a pretty name, my first thought to that was Mariella Frostrup, and she is lovely (well she seems lovely)

TatianaLarina · 05/04/2018 16:04

Ariel is the Jewish name, Arielle is the French version and Ariela/Ariella the Italian version. Made up my arse. Arielle Dombasle is a famous French actress.

I think it’s very pretty.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 05/04/2018 16:09

Ariella & Mariella are beautiful names.

vitaminC · 05/04/2018 16:13

I know 3 Ariellas. All 3 are Jewish and all 3 are genuinely nice people. I think it's a great choice.

MammieBear · 05/04/2018 16:17

Arietta is better...

daisypond · 05/04/2018 19:43

I don't like it. It's very frilly and it's got no strength to it - it's all vowels and soft consonants. Arabella is much better - with the B it weights it a bit, though I would still find that a bit frilly for my taste.

OOMG · 05/04/2018 19:44

I much prefer Arietta as a pp suggested.

UnaMagdalena · 05/04/2018 19:46

I prefer Marielle or Mariella as well.

Ariella is confusing. Not if you see it written down obviously but if I heard it I wouldn't be certain where it started and ended.

Ariela · 05/04/2018 19:47

Not a nice name at all Grin

eloisesparkle · 05/04/2018 19:54

I love Aurelie.

SwedishEdith · 05/04/2018 19:58

I think Arielle sounds nicer - one less syllable makes it a bit less frilly sounding.

daisypond · 05/04/2018 20:06

I don't think Aurelie helps. It's one less syllable but it's the same set of bland sounds. It will be pronounced as "orally", so probably not a good idea!

mathanxiety · 05/04/2018 20:34

...the Areola one was the part that was worrying me the most but it's nice to hear others have used it and they are seen as nice little girls

That's not the point about the closeness to 'areola' though.

Even nice girls can be teased unmercifully if their names sound like body parts, especially parts with a link to sex.

Wrt your comment on pronunciation - are you intending to say Ah-ree-ella or Air-ee-ella?

FartnissEverbeans · 05/04/2018 20:58

Mariella sounds frumpy. Ariella, on the other hand, is gorgeous. I don't see how it's more frilly than, say, Isabella?

Sounds like a made-up name

Why do people say this on name threads? It's clearly not made up, although obviously you're unfamiliar with the culture it comes from. What a weird and unhelpful comment.

TatianaLarina · 05/04/2018 20:59

Arietta is awful so is Arabella. Ariella is nicer than either.

SophieofShepherdsBush · 05/04/2018 21:00

To a pp who thought it reminded them of spiders; it's the spider character in CBeebies Tree Fu Tom.
Other than that it's nice enough.
