What did you do when you couldn't agree on a name?

Did you compromise on a name you both kinda liked? Did one parent get to pick? Was baby nameless until you could decide?

We didn't pick the name until we both liked one. It took pretty much most the pregnancy!

MissingMo · 30/03/2018 21:00

Eventually I gave in. All of the names I loved he hated. The only one he loved I was okay with so we went with that.

upsideup · 30/03/2018 21:05

We waited untill we found one we both wanted, we spent at least an hour a day thoughout each pregnancy untill we got one we both loved.

girlandboy · 30/03/2018 21:11

We actually had a written vote with a choice of three names.
DH fiddled the vote Angry

Aprilmightmemynewname · 30/03/2018 21:17

Waited til just after the birth when dh would have agreed to anything!! Grin
All others agreed on.

bunnynose · 30/03/2018 22:06

I gave in. Didn't like DH's choice. I thought I would like it over time, but I disliked it more and more.

We changed baby's name around 5 months after telling DH how much I hated the name.

I would never agree to a name I didn't like again.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 30/03/2018 22:14

We put all of the names into a list and then gave them a score of 1-10.
We planned to name ds whichever scored most.

It didn’t matter in the end as we had a dd.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 30/03/2018 22:15

Whichever scored most when our two scores were added together, that it.

Bowerbird5 · 30/03/2018 22:15

DS2 we sat in the car park with an hour to go before we had to register him. DH changed his mind after DH was born. Eventually I suggested my dad's best friends name and he went with it.it has always suited him. It was Scotland so we only had three weeks.

Bowerbird5 · 30/03/2018 22:16

Ha! Ha,I love it winky

HeadingForSunshine · 30/03/2018 22:18

Went along with what he liked and just after giving birth said I loved xxx and he looked like xxx. Helped that midwife laughed put loud when he said we were thinking of Hugo Grin

scrivette · 30/03/2018 22:24

Couldn't agree on any during pregnancy so just waited until the babies were born and then decided.

Took a couple of hours with DC1, but DC2 I mentioned a name as soon as he was laid on my tummy and DH agreed.

Waterlemon · 30/03/2018 22:28

We had short lists during both pregnancys but after both times I gave birth, I looked at the little baby I in my arms for the first time and a name just came into my head, and that was that.

DH was so in awe at seeing a baby enter the world, he just accepted it, although he was adamant that he was choosing both of their middle names.

Waterlemon · 30/03/2018 22:34

My Dfs siblings are all known by different names to what’s on their birth certs as DGP couldn’t decide.

Babababababybel14 · 30/03/2018 22:36

I let dh choose. He was excited to be having his first girl after 3 boys

pimlicolife · 30/03/2018 22:45

We went for one we both kind of liked.

Doilooklikeatourist · 30/03/2018 22:49

I got the final vote both times
Luckily DH would have agreed with whatever I said after the birth
But we had just about decided beforehand

GimbleInTheWabe · 30/03/2018 22:51

We each had a short list of about 6 names each (no cross overs sadly!) and when I got to 37weeks we swapped lists, ruled out ones we hated from each others lists and then scored the rest of our 10. The ones with the lowest scores went on another short list.. this short listing happened for a while until DP mentioned a name in passing and we both had a light bulb moment! We didn't decide for definite until after DS was born kept the family waiting for 3 days Grin.
Just keep suggesting names to each other and have an open mind.

MumofBoysx2 · 30/03/2018 23:00

We had a system that worked well for us both times. First of I went through the names book and a couple of lists from the internet, and crossed out any that Ididn't like (after all both have to like it!) then my husband went through and crossed out the ones he didn't like. Then I went through and wrote 1s 2s or 3s against each name left, and my husband did the same, then we produced a list just of our number ones, then we did the same process again, 1,2,3 and we ended up with just a couple of names! Then we decided based on close family members having one of those names so it was nice to name them after them. It worked for us - literally the name chooses itself that way!

DameSylvieKrin · 31/03/2018 07:55

We carried on until we found one we both loved. We just kept writing and swapping lists.

GhirardelliSquare · 31/03/2018 08:29

I don't know what we're going to do... We are in this position. Hoping for a girl purely so we don't have to figure out a boy's name! Confused

TatianaLarina · 31/03/2018 08:31

I had last dibs as I was doing all the work of giving birth. But we agreed so it never came to that.

Frazzled2207 · 31/03/2018 09:35

Neither of our boys had names until they were nearly two weeks old Hmm

Eventually with dc1 we had a shortlist of five and we both ranked them 1-5 on separate pieces of paper. He was named the name that got the highest score!

Eventually with dc 2 we went back to that list having only two options left because dc1 was given three out of the five options on that list in the end (only one of them as a first name obviously)

Frazzled2207 · 31/03/2018 09:38

Ps the trauma of it all is a key reason why there will never be a dc3. If we had a girl it would be fine but there's no way we could ever agree on a name for a ds3.

MadameJosephine · 31/03/2018 09:49

We weren’t married so I said he could pick the surname and I got to pick the first name Grin
