It will always be Princess Diana. It’s quite an iconic name.

SuperBeagle · 24/02/2018 00:18

I love it, but wouldn't use it if I lived in the UK/Ireland. It's too heavily associated with Princess Diana.

I live in Australia, so while it's still synonymous with her, it's certainly not as pervasive. I wouldn't have any qualms about using it here.

Diana has a great meaning and a significant place in Roman mythology, too.

IAmMatty · 24/02/2018 00:20

There's just no escaping the connotation if you live in the UK.

It's also heavily dated/big flicky hair/80s fringe/Duran Duran etc.

frasier · 24/02/2018 00:25

Yes strong iconic name... but if you asked my nieces and nephews (early teens) they would never associated it with Princess Diana.

squarecorners · 24/02/2018 00:29

I think whether you are or you aren't, people will think you are one of those mad Princess Diana fans who collects decorative plates and has a scrapbook of front pages of the Daily Express

RavenWings · 24/02/2018 00:35

Love it. Yes, there's Diana the princess, but also the Wonder Woman association. I think the Princess influence isn't as strong among younger people.

bridgetreilly · 24/02/2018 00:36

I think it's been long enough that you can use it.

MrsFantastic · 24/02/2018 00:49

I like it, but I don't like the nickname "Di".

UnicornSnot · 24/02/2018 00:55

Beautiful name

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 24/02/2018 00:59

Yes, everyone will call her Di. I like the Wonder Woman connection though.

puppymouse · 24/02/2018 01:00

It's DD's middle name. After my DGM. It's dated but there was no doubt in my mind for sentimental reasons.

ChocolateCrunch · 24/02/2018 01:23

Not keen, sorry

It’s okay, although a bit 80s. The inevitable ‘Di’ is awful though.

MissWimpyDimple · 24/02/2018 04:26

Sorry but I detest the name.

Always be connotations with princess diana plus it's just a dreadful name IMO.

However, it's a name and if you like it go for it!

starbrightnight · 24/02/2018 11:49

I love Diana but I hate Di too. The possibility that one day she might be 'Auntie Di'. It's dreadful. Maybe fine a middle name then.

The Diane I know shortens hed name to Dee. Much nicer than Di IMO.

starbrightnight · 24/02/2018 13:47

I think of Diane as an entirely different name from Diana though apparently it is the French variant of Diana. I don't like Diane at all.

Diana is a Divine Goddess - of the hunt, of the moon and of nature and who could communicate with animals. Diana is also the Goddess of childbirth and women.

Agree Dee is better than Di but I don't feel it does Diana justice and reminds me of Sandra Dee from Grease.

I think it is a beautiful name.
Do people associate every Grace with a princess?

slashdragon · 24/02/2018 14:03

Yuck no way! Aside from the obvious association it's just an awful name. Sorry.

starbrightnight · 24/02/2018 14:17

MikeUniformMike I think it might take another generation or two for the association with Princess Diana to diminish, like it has done for Princess Grace, who I don't think about when I hear the name Grace - though 30 or 40 years ago I probably would have done.

@starbrightnight as a Diana I like it, yes you get the Princess Diana references, but it is rare and I find people often call you Diane anyway. My mum hates me being called Di though but mostly it's Lady Di for a nickname.

starbrightnight · 24/02/2018 14:26

PenguinDi - I'm glad you like your name! Do you get called Di a lot and does that bother you?

I actually think of Dirty Diana

starbrightnight · 24/02/2018 14:29

Who is Dirty Diana?
