Initials spell S.O.D....

Hello

We’ve fallen in love with the name Sophie Olivia but our Surname begins with a ‘D’.... is it too bad for her initials to spell SOD? It’s not something I would have ever noticed, but my OH did straight away... I also sort of like Isabella, but it also sounds funny with our surname... at least we are certain on a first name! Middle name is proving tricky 😬

Wow I would never notice this sort of thing but obviously other people would.

Twickerhun · 14/01/2018 17:27

I had unfortunate initials until I married. Please don’t do this to your child.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 14/01/2018 17:30

I knew someone at school who had initials DOG. He was always called Dog.

paxillin · 14/01/2018 18:31

So we've had S.O.D. and A.S.S. suggested recently on MN. Is someone going to ask if K.N.O.B. or C.U.N.T. is fine, too? I'm sure some would still say it's all hunky dory.

raviolidreaming · 14/01/2018 18:57

It's fine, Pax. My initials are CUNTFLAPS but nobody has ever noticed. My work email address is [email protected] and I sign my initials on important document. Nobody has ever said anything and I think it would be very immature of them to. It really isn't a big deal. My brother is KNOB.

paxillin · 14/01/2018 18:58

That is a relief, @raviolidreaming.

viques · 14/01/2018 19:05

helpotron

Erm Sophie Olivia Diane D wouldn't actually solve the problem!

Seekingmiracles · 14/01/2018 19:42

I would notice and I don't think it's fair.
We vetoed lots of lovely 'A' names because middle name was set in stone and DDs initials would have been ASS.

BishopBrennansArse · 14/01/2018 19:44

Little SOD 😂😂😂

CharizMa · 14/01/2018 19:46

Ravioli Grin

spankhurst · 14/01/2018 19:46

At my workplace people's initials are used on everything as their main identifier. One lady is LOL which she loves, but SOD would be bad.

Seekingmiracles · 14/01/2018 19:48

😂😂😂 @raviolidreaming

CharizMa · 14/01/2018 19:49

All students have their initials on their jacket at my dd's school. How else would they avoid losing their jacket!?

Katz · 14/01/2018 19:51

Weve had issues with dds initials. They are AMG she couldn’t have this put on customised Adidas trainers - (I assume it because Mercedes have the copyright to it) you may find this is a problem with SOD

CharizMa · 14/01/2018 19:57

Blimey!

ProseccoPoppy · 14/01/2018 19:57

I really wouldn’t do this. People will notice. Not everyone, but a sizeable percentage. I’d definitely notice - at work our full initials do get used a fair bit. We’ve ruled out names that would spell ODD OCD and ROD for exactly this reason. The pp suggestion of adding an extra middle name is perfect - you get the names you want, DD doesn’t get embarrassing initials.

BrutusMcDogface · 14/01/2018 20:29

If you put initials on, that means you can't pass it on! So wasteful!

timeismovingon · 14/01/2018 20:32

We had this (not SOD but another word obs!) so we just gave DD an extra middle name. It worked really well actually because she now also has my middle name as one of hers :-)

starzig · 14/01/2018 20:52

Sophia Olivia Amelia D. So it could be S.O.A.D

Bobbiepin · 14/01/2018 22:27

Great idea @starzig

BikeRunSki · 14/01/2018 22:31

If you put initials on, that means you can't pass it on! So wasteful!

You can unpick them. Local seeing lady charges a small fee to put new ones on.

sycamore54321 · 14/01/2018 22:32

I'd probably think about avoiding it if it were coming as a result of a surname like O'Donnell or O'Driscoll as was mentioned earlier, making it unavoidably obvious. Middle initials are really obscure though and SOD is a fairly mild, and rather dated jibe, it's not exactly a swear word. Plus you never know what the future holds - I occasionally double-barrel my name with my husband's. If I included a middle initial, it spells out the same abbreviation as a well-known internet/text insult.

user1459464195 · 14/01/2018 22:57

I'd avoid SOD if it were me. DS2's initials actually spell out a name and two people have noticed/commented on it so far and have hinted that they will call him this as a nickname - he's only a few weeks old so ot remains to be seen if they/others do nickname it. e.g. Robert Oliver Norris, initials as RON (not his actual name but as an example only).

I'd add an extra name in there:

Sophie Olivia Grace
Sophie Olivia Beth
Sophie Olivia Niamh
Sophie Olivia Kate

stellarfox · 14/01/2018 23:02

I would not use those initials but I agree the easiest thing to do is add another middle name like Rose, Penelope, Charlotte, Alice...

TittyGolightly · 14/01/2018 23:10

Sophie Olivia Louise Isabella Davies?
