Opinion on the names Nova and Kaia? Which do you prefer?

Kaia, assuming pronounced ky-a, not kay-a, is nice. I think I prefer the spelling Kaya though. There is also Maya/Maia.

Nova is OK, but somehow I get a Sci-Fi vibe from it.

Joeybee · 14/01/2018 00:38

Nova - It is cute but strong, it's cool, it sounds modern, but it's also a traditional name. Love that it means new.
Kaia doesn't look nice written down, and people wouldn't always know how to say/spell it.

mamalovebird · 14/01/2018 00:43

Kaia but I prefer the spelling Kaya.

Lucylululu · 14/01/2018 14:14

I really like both but Nova is getting a bit popular so I'd go for Kaia. Don't worry about people saying its a car - I didn't know, I doubt any children will know/care, and plus even if they do ... So? Just a car, not like she's being named after a condom brand or something embarrassing. Also loads of names have products linked to them - Stella is getting super popular and it just makes me think of beer, but I still like the name!

Shinybothways · 14/01/2018 14:49

Stella was a popular name meaning Star long before the beer came about!

Try the Prime Minister test: is it likely that a child called Nova would ever be taken seriously?

QED.

Chocolateyescakeyes · 14/01/2018 15:20

Yes Shiny, you mean just like Nova means 'a star showing a sudden large increase in brightness....'.

I also think a little more progressive thinking is required if you would not take a Prime Minister seriously, purely on the basis that their name doesn't appeal to you. Especilly since it was not even their choosing in the first place.

RavenWings · 14/01/2018 15:23

I think neither of them are great to be honest. Kaia is probably a bit more acceptable though, as there's already plenty of Maias around.

Shinybothways · 14/01/2018 15:30

Ok OP you win. Your name choices will in no way limit your child.

Your babe your way hun.

ChoudeBruxelles · 14/01/2018 15:31

They both sound like cars

Chocolateyescakeyes · 14/01/2018 15:37

Shiny, it's not about winning. Just my opinion. You are totally entitled to yours. I would like to hope that someone wouldn't be hindered by their name, but judged by their actions and reactions, but that is probably unlikely in today's world.

Jedigirl29 · 14/01/2018 15:47

Hi I have to be biased to Kaia as that's my name 😂

notanother11plusmum · 14/01/2018 22:54

OP I don't know why you asked given how angry you've got at people's opinions.

Why did you bother?

RidingWindhorses · 14/01/2018 23:06

Not only is Nova a car it's a shit car.

Prefer Estella.

RidingWindhorses · 14/01/2018 23:07

Or was technically.

stellarfox · 14/01/2018 23:11

Kaia by far. Nova sounds very chavvy/trendy to me, sorry!

RidingWindhorses · 14/01/2018 23:15

Or Astraea/ Astrea meaning star.

silkpyjamasallday · 14/01/2018 23:25

Cindy Crawford's daughter is called Kaia, I think it's the best of the two, Nova I could only ever think of the car.

luffer · 14/01/2018 23:25

Chevy made a Nova car as well. Nora? If I had to choose between the two I'd choose Kaia but it's not a nice name to say. It sort of sticks in the back of your throat.

MistressDeeCee · 14/01/2018 23:31

Nova

Is Kaia pronounced Kaya..? As in, slang for weed?

I know someone with a "Kaya" and instantly think "ganja smoker" when I hear her DDs name. Which, she is

MamaMotherMummy · 15/01/2018 01:59

I know a Nova and she's lovely. kaia sounds a bit nothingy to me

MoggyP · 15/01/2018 07:16

So trade from a Nova to an Astr(e)a?

I do hope your surname isn't Vauxhall

OnNaturesCourse · 15/01/2018 11:02

People are so mean OP.

You use whatever name you want. I learnt a long time ago to never ask mumsnets an opinion on names. Most users can't just say "I like/I dislike", most need to rip down your idea and stamp on it with their thoughts. (And repeat whatever the other agreeing posters say!)

As I said Kaia is nice, so is Nova but personally I prefer Kaia.

Xxx
