Recently stumbled upon the name Floris. Its a boys name (danish, means to blossom). Do you think its usable for a girl?

Without any Scandinavian connection, to me it looks like you couldn’t decide between Flora and Doris.

RavenWings · 06/01/2018 14:43

No. It's florist that lost the t. Or a mashup of Doris/Florence as said above.

Besides, I think the whole idea of taking a name from another language and swapping the gender is stupid - keep it to the cultural usage and spelling. It comes across as a bit thick if the child ever goes to that country or runs into people from it, or like you simply couldn't be arsed to research properly.

daisypond · 06/01/2018 14:45

Floris is a Dutch boys' name too. I don't know about Scandinavia. I would always assume Floris was a boy, but I think you probably could get away with it as a girls' name in the UK. I quite like it.

ruralmother · 06/01/2018 14:47

Haha, don't hold back raven. Perhaps I should have been more clear....its commonly used as a boys name and is listed as a girls name too but much less common.

What about Florin? Florine?

ruralmother · 06/01/2018 14:49

To my huge embarrassment there is a likelihood that Ive mixed up dutch and danish Blush. Baby brain!

I would expect a Floris to be a boy (possibly wearing scent, from the range of that name, predominantly marketed to men)

How about Doris, Janice, Eunice?

hendricksyousay · 06/01/2018 14:50

I like it though , it's pretty

MrsFoxPlus4 · 06/01/2018 14:50

To me it sounds like a girls name, I do associate it with flowers.

tenbob · 06/01/2018 14:51

It makes me think of the company that makes aftershave and soaps for posh old men

IHeartDodo · 06/01/2018 14:51

In BeNeLux countries I think it's a boy's name!
Flora?

Thetreesareallgone · 06/01/2018 14:53

I quite like it too, but I think the child will spend their whole life saying 'like Doris with a Fl'.

It is very similar to names like Florence, Flora.

Pamsie · 06/01/2018 16:03

How about Florise? It is a girl's name in France, although a bit old-fashioned.

FlexTimeCheekyFucker · 06/01/2018 16:04

Boy's name innit.

niknac1 · 06/01/2018 16:05

EarthwormsAndSnails · 06/01/2018 16:07

Florise is better then Floris.

NurseJay · 06/01/2018 16:08

Definitely go for Florise x

TheVanguardSix · 06/01/2018 16:15

Floris is a perfume house. I instantly thought of this.

TheVanguardSix · 06/01/2018 16:16

Florise Confused

FloRise plumbing company is what Google will come up with.

Don't do it.

Harebellmeadow · 06/01/2018 16:18

Reminds me of the boys' names Florian, Florio, Fabian, Flavian. But closest to Florian which is less niche than Floris, which sounds extremely elegant and tweedy and highly educated.

Harebellmeadow · 06/01/2018 16:19

But for a girl it sounds quite lovely actually and no tweedy associations.

Growingboys · 06/01/2018 16:24

Says expensive bath essence to me

Buxbaum · 06/01/2018 19:46

Flora, Fleur, Florence, Felicity?

vintagechick43 · 06/01/2018 19:48

FizzyGreenWater · 07/01/2018 19:56
