I’m not pregnant but we’ve been talking about trying for a 3rd. And I’ve realised that naming a 3rd one might be rather complicated / difficult...

Blaise
Louis
Ludwig
Emil
Nathaniel / Nathanael (?)
Matthias

Cecilia
Mafalda (after my great aunt)
....?

Tia :)

Only like Nathaniel from your list.
Are you particularly looking for a sort of European sounding name ?

horatioisabrick · 26/12/2017 23:44

Back DH is British but I’m European (from various European countries but my first language is German, I guess?). So yes, I just like these kind of names...

but the rest are really not good that’s a very nice way of expressing dislike, thanks Grin (smile)

aww

I honestly love Sebastian but it’s rather popular. And I’ve heard someone make a really awful remark about that name last week (she didn’t know that I liked it this much) which has made me a bit hesitant...

My personal favourite is Blaise, btw.

I love Emil, Nathaniel and Matthias. Louis is OK but I find it a little cutesy sounding and insubstantial. I can't hear Blaise without "It's Blaze....and the Monster Machines!" in my head- thanks to DS1's obsession with the TV show (realise that might just be me though). Grin

Boys suggestions: Anders, Jonas, Max, Erik, Konstantin, Dominik, Lukas.

Girls suggestions: Lovisa, Astrid, Freja, Stella, Annika, Ingrid.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/12/2017 11:50

I like Louis and Ludwig, dislike Blaise.
Love the suggestions for a girl, by @user1459464195 above, fabby ! 😄

howthelightgetsin · 27/12/2017 12:29

Just dislike Blaise from your list.

Mrsknackered · 27/12/2017 13:49

I dislike Blaise. Love Nathaniel and Emil.

I like Cecilia and Mafalda. Although I didn't think the latter is a bit sleeping beauty evil witch Malificent-y.

XmasTreeOhXmasTree · 27/12/2017 14:23

Emil and Cecilia are the only two I like from your lists.

horatioisabrick · 27/12/2017 18:50

No one seems to like Blaise... that’s too bad.

@user1459464195
I like Lovisa but Idk, wouldn’t that be butchered?

autumngold6 · 27/12/2017 18:56

I really like Nathaniel and Cecilia.

horatioisabrick · 27/12/2017 19:01

@Mrsknackered
True, Mafalda might be a bit witchy. It simply reminds me of my great aunt (she really was remarkable) and Mafalda is actually a form of the more popular Matilda, which is quite interesting imo.

Also, Mafalda and Cecilia were simply the only girl’s names we managed to come up with (we already have 2 DDs and finding a 3rd name might be difficult...)

But Cecilia might sound too much like the name of DD1...

Love Emil (DD1 did Emil and the detectives as end of y6 play). But know 3 Matthiases (one in Switzerland (Peruvian- English) one in London (danish - Irish) and one in Kent (English- Finnish’s). So quite international and travels well, if you know what I mean. Afraid I am another one not keen on Blaise.

LOVE Mathilda. Wanted that for both DDs but dH not keen. Not keen on Cecilia (the Simon and Garfunkel song), but love Cecily and Clemency. Knew 2 amazing women called Annika and Astrid, love those.

horatioisabrick · 27/12/2017 19:03

What do you mumsnetters think about Nathanael vs Nathaniel? I know, Nathanael isn’t as common in the U.K. but it just seems more natural to me personally.

OP posts:
Sugarpiehoneyeye · 27/12/2017 19:03

Lovisa is beautiful !

PhuntSox · 27/12/2017 19:07

Ilona

grasspigeons · 27/12/2017 19:17

I really like Matthias
I'm not keen on Blaise or Ludwig
The others are fine

The girls names are nice

NotAgainYoda · 27/12/2017 19:17

Nathanael looks wrong. It's a far less common spelling. People will mis-spell it whatever, just because some people aren't that great a spelling. But Nathaniel

horatioisabrick · 27/12/2017 19:26

@PhuntSox

I love Ilona but that’s a name that really... loses its appeal if it’s mispronounced (for example like Eye-lo-na) imo, unfortunately. But still, thank you for the suggestion :)

I think Blaise is lovely - first associations are Blaise Pascal and Modesty Blaise, so a unisex use possible. I do live in Europe though. And I like most of your other names. Any others: Adeline (Romance of the Forest), Adelheid, Frederik, Marie, Rosamunde, Dulcinea.

Harebellmeadow · 27/12/2017 20:05

Also Ludwig I like, Edmund, Leonard (Leo), Marius (male), Mareike, Mathilde, Sophie-Charlotte (Prussian queen), Ottilie, Carsten, Markus.

BackforGood · 27/12/2017 21:17

Another who likes Blaise the least from that list.
I think if you are going to be living in the UK, it kind of makes sense to spell Nathaniel the 'usual' English way. If people hear a name they know they they tend to spell it the way they know. If it is a name they are unfamiliar with then they'd more likely ask.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 27/12/2017 21:24

I like all of your boys' choices apart from Blaise. Ludwig is good but I'm really not sure it would work in the UK. Nathaniel is a good name but don't spell it Nathanael.

Cecilia is lovely and the patron saint of music as well :)
Mafalda does have a touch of fairytale baddie about it, tbh.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 27/12/2017 21:32

German girls' names I like include Paulina, Clara, Frieda, Luisa, Felicitas. I've heard of a few Linneas over here - a Scandi name I think - very pretty. Ottilie is for some reason or other having a huge moment in some UK circles - I wouldn't do it for that reason alone (plus you'll have people pronouncing it Ottily).
