Battle has officially commenced! My DH and I are at war over a name for our expected baby boy. We spent countless hours disagreeing over names for our DD and eventually pulled Stella Joy out of a hat (no really, literally pulled it out of a hat. We couldn't agree so each chose a few favourites and picked one each).
We've got a peedie bit of time yet, ETA is middle of Feb, but the MIL is putting on the pressure to get a name sorted.
I'm keen for something a little different without being cringy or downright strange.
I've been championing:
Caspian
Ezra
Corin

DH is hoping for a local classic; Kenneth, Donald, Alexander, Magnus. All perfectly nice names, but not quite what I had in mind. I really don't want to call my son Kenny or Sandy.
Peter is already in for a middle name after my late BIL. I'd like another middle name, too, but DH isn't fussed.
Any new suggestions gratefully considered!

But the point is that there are so many Donalds in some parts of Scotland that Trump wouldn't really cross your mind. Hence op' s husband.
Oliver always makes me think of Cromwell!

Jaytee38 · 16/12/2017 23:11

The word peedie gave you away. I'm a highlander but know a few Islanders Wink

autumnkate · 18/12/2017 15:45

Alisdair?

MikeUniformMike · 18/12/2017 15:52

I like Douglas. Doug is a nice man's name, Dougie is cute for a boy. Douglas sounds quite rugged and manly. wee dougie would only be wee for a few years.

I like the dad names like Alan and Kenny (handsome former Scottish footballer names) because they'll probably be popular again after the cute names trend has passed. I know a Don in his 40s and the name really suits him.

horatioisabrick · 18/12/2017 23:37

I like Ezra, Magnus, Thorfinn and Alexander. Dougal and Douglas are also cute.

scottishdiem · 18/12/2017 23:50

Caspian - Very Narnia. Constant playground taunts re wardrobes.
Ezra - Too close to justice league coming out. You like The Flash?
Corin - Meh.

Magnus though. Traditional but still off the wall like Caspian, Ezra and Corin.

Ceebs85 · 18/12/2017 23:52

No name help but DO NOT involve the MIL in discussions. This is your child. She had her turn!

Marv1nGay3 · 19/12/2017 00:00

Struan?

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/12/2017 01:03

Thorfinn is amazing!

Torin, whilst not a name from your neck of the woods, sounds like it could be...

lovelyjubilly · 19/12/2017 09:06

You have very similar taste to me. Currently trying to get DH to agree on one of the following (with only one week to go until baby arrives):

Basil
Fergus
Jasper
Gideon Autin
Rufus
Rupert
Judah
Levi
Amos
Caspian
Otis
Zebedee
Rafferty
Woodrow
Thaddeus

BTW you need to tell your MIL to sod off. Tell her that you're picking a name after the baby has been born.

lovelyjubilly · 19/12/2017 09:07

Sorry, that should have said:
Gideon
Austin

BaronessBomburst · 19/12/2017 09:14

Magnus Thorfinn is fab!

How about Colin Thorfinn Peter R....?

horatioisabrick · 19/12/2017 09:30

Magnus Thorfinn sounds like the name of a Viking warrior (or the modern equivalent of that). What an awesome combo :)

Magnus is such a lovely name. Nice meaning, clearly masculine but still with a rather soft sound (imo).

But your MIL’s opinion really shouldn’t matter.

FizzyGreenWater · 19/12/2017 10:25

Sigurd?

I'd say no to Thorfinn just to give MIL a well-deserved (by the sound of it) poke in the eye. It's none of her business!

Colin Magnus Alexander

Colin Alexander Caspian

nigelschristmasham · 19/12/2017 22:32

Love Thorfinn. And quite like caspian. But whoever said Soren gets my vote. Love that name.

Enko · 20/12/2017 20:27

I Love Colin

Conrad
Edmund
Edgar
Eli
Augustus
Horatio
Reginald (I love this but dh was on a firm no)
Bertram (nn Bertie)

Sweetmimi · 20/12/2017 20:43

Agree with all the posters when they say not to involve your MIL in your process or allow her to put pressure for a name to be chosen! You’ll find the perfect name when you and your DH are ready x

buttercup54321 · 22/12/2017 23:36

Colin Peter
Colin Peter William
Colin Peter Anthony
Colin Peter James
Clive
Kelvin
Nicholas Nico
Charles Charlie
Edison
Timothy
Craig
John
Rory
Vincent
Brinton

ChequeredPasta · 23/12/2017 07:30

Angus?

numberthr · 23/12/2017 07:41

Donald/Kenneth/Colin...please don’t do that to a poor baby!
Kenny...can’t stop linking it to Kill Kenny (South Park)
Corin...isn’t that a girls name?
Ezra...love that name, though I think it’s becoming quite popular?
Xander could work for you and your husband?

MadameJosephine · 23/12/2017 09:10

Thorfinn is fantastic! Sounds like it’s popular in your neck of the woods though and I’d probably avoid it just to make a point with the MIL

Love, love, love Douglas or how about Dougal?

Mendingfences · 23/12/2017 09:44

Could other 'Thor/Tor names work?
Torben / Thorben
Torstein /Torsten
Torbjørn / Thorbjørn

Or other viking/norrønt names?
Sigurd
Odin

FizzyGreenWater · 23/12/2017 09:50

Oh Torben is good!!!

FfsSanta · 23/12/2017 10:48

Douglas and Gregor were 2 i didn't get to use. I briefly considered Malcolm and Travis as well. Blush

Also discussed Duncan (i knew too many) and Donald (made DH think duck). I wasn't allowed Nicholas or Nathan either.

Thorfinn is kind of awesome. Grin

FfsSanta · 23/12/2017 10:50

Also have a soft spot for Magnus and Fergus - definitely good with Thorfinn Peter as middle names👍
