Names whose popularity mystify you

I feel I must be showing my age because I don't understand the popularity of Fern/e. I don't hate it, I am just amazed at it's immense popularity. Why do you think it has caught the zeitgeist at the present time?

Never understood why William is popular. It sounds so wet to me.

For girls I'm not a fan of Emily or Grace.

Lexi Mae was popular round here a few years ago. It's awful.

And I mainly like 'old fashioned' names but I'm seeing 'Frank' lot recently, which is a used car dealer from Walford kind of name to me Confused

Sophronia · 04/12/2017 17:28

Maddie, Mia, Mila, Poppy, Harper, Darcey, Noah, Teddy, Toby, Jaxon

Sophronia · 04/12/2017 17:29

Courtney Yes Lexi-Mae, Lacey-Mae, Lola-Mae and Layla-Mae were all popular here for a while!

SaigonSaigon · 04/12/2017 17:31

Not hugely loving Alfie, Archie, Albee type names. Massively overused round my way which puts you off them.

MadForlt · 04/12/2017 17:31

All those elderly people with 'antiquated, musty, old names' were babies once too.

I don't like the name Brian. I don't have any logical reason for it, but I dislike it so much I would think twice before dating a Brian even if he was the double of Chris Hemsworth.

extinctspecies · 04/12/2017 17:31

Quite a lot of Fern/Fearne's on TV which may account for its popularity.

Fearne Cotton
Fern Britton

er .....

MadForlt · 04/12/2017 17:32

Hmm, don't think it's popular though so I clearly am disrailing the thread. Ignore my post about Brian!

fleshmarketclose · 04/12/2017 17:32

I don't see the thrall of Olivia to me it sounds clunky and Oliver too to some extent. Some of the granny chic names I like but others I can't envisage as a baby such as Agatha or Maud or Ethel. Then again there are other names that I would never have chosen but I love when I hear them now such as Rosa, Evelyn and Pearl.

I don't like these twee names like Lexi. But I quite like some of the old fashioned names like Violet and Ivy. Veronica is another old name I like but never heard of one under around 90. But it's all a matter of taste.

CourtneyLoveIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/12/2017 17:33

I think Brian is due a revival anytime soon Grin If Frank can become popular again, here's hoping for lots of little Brians...

Chickoletta · 04/12/2017 17:34

Hyphenated names. Just awful.

Tentomidnight · 04/12/2017 17:34

Samuel
Sam, great
Samuel = overindulgent, wet parent addressing child

SeraphinaDombegh · 04/12/2017 17:36

Hayden/Kaiden/Jayden. No good reason, I just don't like the sound of them.

I love Aidan though Confused

Movablefeast · 04/12/2017 17:37

I actually really liked the name Olivia when I had my first dd in 2000, but started to get a feel it was going to get very popular. I still think it's a lovely name but when dd went to school the teacher told me her previous class had 6 Olivias; that was over a decade ago and it's still in the top 2. Some names just become irresistible and irrepressible!

Ella is irritating me at the minute. Every other baby born seems to be called Ella.

There isn’t anything actually wrong with the name, I’ve just never understood why anyone would use a name that is already massively popular. Its nothing special either so I don’t see why so many are so keen on naming their DC the same as all the other girls in their class.

pontiouspilates · 04/12/2017 17:42

Tyler - really do not get this name at all.

pipilangstrumpf · 04/12/2017 17:46

William- I really don't like the Willi part.

CandyMelts · 04/12/2017 17:49

Seconding Amelia, I was so shocked to see how high up the rankings it is

Movablefeast · 04/12/2017 17:50

If Brian makes a comeback maybe Kenneth could too! From a generation above mine but just could never see the appeal of Ken or Kenneth. But they were all still some mummies darlings!!! Grin
