I used to think it was good that in the U.K. There isn't a set list of names and parents are free to name their dc whatever they like but surely some of these are cruel?

OP posts:

bet there's nowhere on the planet that if a child has a name that is 'shit' or 'fart' in the local language that everyone will thoughtfully stroke their chins and say 'that's awfully interesting

But none of OP's examples mean any such thing. They are in the main completely normal names that she just doesn't know are "foreign".

Fekko · 05/11/2017 16:44

I'm speaking from my experience - the extreme being that very very normal names here do mean 'shit' 'piss' where DH is from. My friend had a first and surname that is the same as saying 'shit piss' in English. A cousin has a name that sounds like the n-word in English - so you just wouldn't would you?

The problem with lists like the OP is that there are plenty of us on here who see no problem at all with a fair few, and know people called that.

Personally I don't like the sound of the names Gilbert and Peregrin but that's just me.

LilQueenie · 05/11/2017 16:46

Metatron - name of an arc angel much like gabriel. Nothing wrong with it.

Fekko · 05/11/2017 16:47

I've not heard of that but really like the name Gabriel (and Raphael).

Littlegreyauditor · 05/11/2017 19:40

Metatron is the voice of God, played by Alan Rickman in Dogma.

Bollocks to very normal names in English mean "shit piss" in any language. You might find one or two but come off it.

Fekko · 05/11/2017 19:45

Nope. It's true. I thought it was a wind up but I guess it's in the pronunciation. So I see your 'bollocks' and raise you a 'I know so there as I've seen/heard it for myself'.

hotmilkandcrunchynuts · 05/11/2017 19:46

Please do tell us all of them then, since there are plenty. I'm sure we'd all love to know?

Spam88 · 05/11/2017 21:18

Ohh I was thinking Metatron was a transformer but that’s Megatron isn’t it. D’oh.

Wallabyone · 05/11/2017 22:33

Erm, Neophytos is a perfectly normal Greek name with various forms. I have a few in my family and friendship circle.
