OP posts:

Neev and Shavaughn are horrible.
Niamh and Siobhan sound a bit dated.

Littlegreyauditor · 04/11/2017 18:18

Well Niamh is also an ancient Irish name with its origin in pre Christian mythology, so yes I suppose it could be considered “dated”.

She was the golden haired daughter of the Celtic sea god.

BenLui · 04/11/2017 18:20

Euan is very unusual for a girl but I know a female Cameron and a female Finley.

Courtney, Hillary, Beverly, Sidney, Leslie and Lindsay all started as male names.

There was a thread recently where someone suggested Aubrey for a girl.

Euan isn’t any different really.

The rest of the list as others have said, lots of them are perfectly normal names.

ladystarkers · 04/11/2017 18:20

Euan is scottish🙄

OldWitch00 · 04/11/2017 18:29

Orinate, urinate not great...

MikeUniformMike · 04/11/2017 18:45

I think Niamh is lovely. Siobhan not so.

MikeUniformMike · 04/11/2017 18:46

Depends who you know with the name, I suppose.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 04/11/2017 18:49

Let me guess, OP is English Hmm try educating yourself. Maybe you won’t look like such a fool and offend so many people next time you post.

endehors · 04/11/2017 18:51

What a narrow minded & ignorant OP. It's quite nasty to pour scorn on names that are perfectly normal in other cultures.

Agree.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 04/11/2017 18:53

I don't like Niamh and Siobhan. Because the spelling doesn't work in English.

Well no, because they are Irish names. Spelt in Irish. It’s a different language.

Hooplaaaa · 04/11/2017 18:55

"mate" though can you imagine? Grin

daisypond · 04/11/2017 19:01

"Mate" is pronounced Mah-teh. It's the equivalent of Matt for Matthew.

FutureMrsTempah · 04/11/2017 19:01

Mate is pronounced similarly to Matty

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 04/11/2017 19:02

I know a Mate.
I'm not sure but I think it might be French. The name not the person I know. I've no idea if he's French as I don't know him that well.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 04/11/2017 19:03

OP makes the English look bad.

Joinourclub · 04/11/2017 19:03

I've taught kids with names on that list. None of other kids in their classes even raised an eyebrow.

Spam88 · 04/11/2017 19:06

Loving Metatron 👍

Mimmi78 · 04/11/2017 19:08

A pal posted a picture of a new babe on FB named Bridie! I’m from Scotland.....this is a savoury pastry up there!!!!

raisinsarenottheonlyfruit · 04/11/2017 19:09

Well Niamh is also an ancient Irish name with its origin in pre Christian mythology, so yes I suppose it could be considered “dated”.

The receptionist at the Drs asked me for DS's "Christian name" the other day. I said - "Well, pre-Christian, actually". Grin

I probably sounded like a twat but I don't care, I couldn't resist! And anyway, who says "Christian name" in a multicultural town these days, seriously?!

MargotsDevil · 04/11/2017 19:10

Mate is Polish actually....

daisypond · 04/11/2017 19:11

Bridie is a "normal" name, too. It's been used for centuries in the UK. I know one - rather an old lady now.

Fishfingersandwichnocheese · 04/11/2017 19:14

Margot thank you - ive only spoken to this person via email but he's a member of a club/hobby I attend - just in a different county to me.

From the way others have pronounced his name I though possibly French. Blush

Hooplaaaa · 04/11/2017 19:16

Soz Smile

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 04/11/2017 19:19

I said - "Well, pre-Christian, actually".

Grin I think I might steal that line!

daisypond · 04/11/2017 19:24

Mate is a common name in Croatia and Hungary as well as Poland.
