We sometimes talk about what we would name our future child and I really like the sound lee-la. But we couldn't find any name that resembles this sound. Leila may does but it sometimes cause confusion and pronounced as Lay-lah. What do you think of the name Liyla? Any other suggestions?

I'd assume Liyla was an incorrectly spelt Lila or Leila.

CrizzleMyShizzle · 12/09/2017 21:56

I wouldn't guess it was pronounced leela

PurpleDaisies · 12/09/2017 21:56

Is that a recognised spelling? It looks made up to me.

RNBrie · 12/09/2017 21:57

I would pronounce Liyla as Lilah.

Leela is an actual name you know?

PurpleDaisies · 12/09/2017 21:57

Lila is pronounced lee la.

AmysTiara · 12/09/2017 21:58

I'd pronounce that as lie-la.
Why don't you spell it Leela?

LimpidPools · 12/09/2017 21:58

I would think it sounded like Lie-la. With a strange and not particularly attractive spelling.

If I wanted Lee-la I would spell it Lila. Which is German for purple and is pronounced Lee-la.

CrizzleMyShizzle · 12/09/2017 21:58

Lila is pronounced ly-la isn't it?

smileygrapefruit · 12/09/2017 21:58

I would pronounce Leila as Lee la. I wouldn't know how to pronounce the way you've spelt it, sorry. We've called our dd Lilah and it's pronounced lye la but people ask whether it's lye la or Lee la!

SoupDragon · 12/09/2017 21:59

The Leela I knew was spelt just like that.

Loyly · 12/09/2017 21:59

Would it be easier to simply spell it Leela?

HolgerDanske · 12/09/2017 21:59

I think she would be forever having to explain the correct pronounciation. When I saw the thread title I assumed it was a 'unique' spelling of Leila.

Not really sure what to suggest, I think you'd be better off just spelling it Leela. But then I think that would be a made up name. So yeah, it depends on how you feel about those......

Backtoblack1 · 12/09/2017 22:00

Should be Lila

Applesandpears56 · 12/09/2017 22:00

Call her lia

HolgerDanske · 12/09/2017 22:01

Oh hmmm it seems Leela is an actual name.

I'd go with that if you love that sound.

ProfessorCat · 12/09/2017 22:03

I've taught a Leela. I thought they'd made it up, but clearly not!

HolgerDanske · 12/09/2017 22:04

Tbf it could still be a made up name.

SuperBeagle · 12/09/2017 22:05

I'd pronounce Liyla lie-la, as in the name Lila.

If you want the pronunciation lee-la, call her Leela, like in Futurama.

CrizzleMyShizzle · 12/09/2017 22:08

Go with Leela.

Athena404 · 12/09/2017 22:09

I would pronounce Liyla as lie-hila. If you want Leela just spell it normally then everyone will understand

Sophronia · 12/09/2017 22:15

Leela looks much better than Liyla

Liadain · 12/09/2017 23:50

Leela looks much better than Liyla. And Leila beats both by a mile! I'd go with Leila, I don't think you'd have to correct pronunciation more than once, and not with everyone.

I would have assumed Liyla is pronounced Lie-la, fwiw.

BackforGood · 12/09/2017 23:57

If I saw it written down I'd say "lie - la" (to rhyme with pie), not "lee" (to rhyme with pea) which I think is what you are after ?

I would assume it were a name from Indian heritage too.

Ttbb · 13/09/2017 00:31

The spelling you are looking for is Lila or Liala

TillyTheTiger · 13/09/2017 07:47

I think the only way you'll get the correct pronunciation is if you spell it Leela, every other variation will get lay-la or ly-la
