We sometimes talk about what we would name our future child and I really like the sound lee-la. But we couldn't find any name that resembles this sound. Leila may does but it sometimes cause confusion and pronounced as Lay-lah. What do you think of the name Liyla? Any other suggestions?

Leela is a name. I know one.

autumnkate · 13/09/2017 08:21

Leila wouldn't be confusing because it is the Arabic name Leila pronounced Lay-la. It would never be pronounced Leela.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/09/2017 11:43

I'd struggle with the pronunciation.
Rule with names are spell it as you want it pronounced
Leela
Leighla

ShotsFired · 13/09/2017 11:48

I was at school with a Leala (first version of the name I'd ever know, so to me it was "Lee-La" from the start). But she got called "Lay-La" by teachers a lot too.

It's just a name that you are going to have to pronounce for people if they pick the wrong one. Can you be arsed with that? If not, pick a different name.

YorkieButtons · 13/09/2017 11:50

Slightly off topic but I know of a boy called Leland- as in Lee-land.
What a strange name!

Sallywiththegoodhurrr · 13/09/2017 11:53

Really confusing spelling OP, why don't you just use Leela?

ILoveDolly · 13/09/2017 11:55

Layla and Leila and Lejla are pronounced Layla. They are relatively common names in many parts of the world and if you insist on Leila pronounced Leela then you ARE going to be correcting people's pronunciation.
Leela is pronounced Leela.
Lila can be Lie la or leela.
Both Leila and Leela are in Indian/Persian culture, Lila is a bit more European, depends what you want really. I really like Layla because I love that Eric Clapton song Grin

Rednailsandnaeknickers · 13/09/2017 11:58

I think most people in the U.K. would pronounce that spelling as "lie-la" not what you're after.
Why not just use Leela if that's the sound you want?

TidyDancer · 13/09/2017 19:31

Lila is pronounced Lye-Ler. If you want Leela just have Leela. It's a name. In fact it was/is a character in Hollyoaks.

PurpleDaisies · 13/09/2017 19:42

Lila is pronounced Lye-ler

Not necessarily. I've known several Lilas pronounced lee la

Pemba · 13/09/2017 22:30

Liyla? - Looks made up, but I would think it was ly-la, to rhyme with Tyler, too. I would think that if you spelt it Lila or Lilah too, although I suppose your chosen pronunciation does make some sense with that spelling, but normally those names are 'lye-la'. And Leila is always lay-la.

Why don't you spell it Leela, then there's not much possibility of misunderstandings? In general, I don't think names with a y in the middle look that nice visually anyway, when written down, the 'y' looks awkward somehow.

grufallosfriend · 13/09/2017 22:33

Lila is german for violet (the colour) and pronounced Lee-la. I guess it's pronounced like that in many non English languages.

BunloafAndCrumpets · 13/09/2017 22:35

My friends have a Leela. Love the name! Why not just spell it like that.

I knew two Leilas, one pronounced Lay-la one pronounced Lee-la!

grufallosfriend · 14/09/2017 09:53

Leila would be like Sheila, so Leela.

MammieBear · 14/09/2017 10:17

Looks spelt wrong to me.

dippypanda · 14/09/2017 19:56

My name is Leela..... Grin
it is pronounced "lee-la"
Amazing how many people still get it wrong!

dippypanda · 14/09/2017 20:00

Oh it is Indian/Persian origin from what I can gather, though I am neither. I do get a lot of compliments on it though Smile

MikeUniformMike · 14/09/2017 20:04

Liyla - Yoonique and guaranteed to cause people to think WTF?

I would thing it was pronounced Lee-Eye-la

HolgerDanske · 14/09/2017 20:11

No, Leila is not like Sheila.

Leila is pronounce lie-la or lay-la.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 14/09/2017 20:18

I have a neighbour called Leila who pronounces it Lee eye la! Confused Call her Leela. Smile

HolgerDanske · 14/09/2017 20:23

Well. I've certainly learned from this thread that there are a fair number of people who don't research how to actually pronounce a name before they choose to use it.

OP please do spell it Leela, it's the only acceptable way.

MikeUniformMike · 14/09/2017 21:57

I know a Leila pronounced Leela, but the Arabic name transcribed as Leila is pronounced Lie-la or Lay-la. It means Night.

SuperBeagle · 14/09/2017 22:27

Leila is pronounced like Layla.
