This is my name. It's pronounced In-ess.

All my life in this sodding country people have pronounced it incorrectly. It is said how it's spelled!!!!

If anyone calls me In-ezz or In-iss or worst of all EYNES I scream inwardly.

HTH Smile

BumFlapBob · 30/08/2017 21:36

NO OP IT IS NOT FUCKING IN-EZZ

MummaGiles · 30/08/2017 21:37

In (like in) es (like in yes)

BumFlapBob · 30/08/2017 21:38

Good god no it is not In-yes

LaCerbiatta · 30/08/2017 21:43

Where is she from? If portuguese , then it's in-esh, with the 'e' being an 'eh' sound. That's the closest i can describe it anyway. If she's british but just chosea foreign name then you need to ask really.

For what it's worth Ines is one of my favourite names but we didn't use it because it doesn't sound right with an English accent :)

floradora · 30/08/2017 21:44

Inès and Inez are different names (or different versions of the same name). The first us pronounced to rhyme with "finesse", the second you sound the Z (like a Z ! Smile)

BumFlapBob · 30/08/2017 21:45

You have the accent the wrong way round flora.

JamOrCreamFirst · 30/08/2017 21:51

No she doesn't.

Zvandelle · 30/08/2017 21:51

My daughter's name!!Inn ezz, slight emphasis on the first, not second syllable. Xx

JamOrCreamFirst · 30/08/2017 21:51

Just ask your friend how she pronounces it and go with that.

floradora · 30/08/2017 21:51

Bumflap - in French or Spanish?? It would sound wrong in French with an é...

BumFlapBob · 30/08/2017 21:55

Spanish.

If it's spelled Ines, it's pronounced In-ess.

BumFlapBob · 30/08/2017 21:56

Inez is the American spelling btw, hence a lot of people pronouncing Ines incorrectly.

JennyOnAPlate · 30/08/2017 22:00

In-ess.

yellowsun · 30/08/2017 22:05

I knew a Portuguese girl who pronounced it Inesh.

elQuintoConyo · 30/08/2017 22:07

In-ess. I'd emphasize the 'ess' bit but i'm biased.

LadyPug · 30/08/2017 22:10

Goodness! Why would my friend choose such a complex name?!

OP posts:
BumFlapBob · 30/08/2017 22:12

It isn't complex. It is literally said how it's spelt.

LadyPug · 30/08/2017 22:33

Not sure if you've read the thread but it turns out there's multiple ways to say it!

OP posts:
OnNaturesCourse · 30/08/2017 22:38

Ines is Inn-nis
Inez is Inn-nez
Innes/Innis is Inn-ness

Family name

SumAndSubstance · 30/08/2017 22:50

In Germany, it's ee-ness, emphasis on the ee.

LadyPug · 30/08/2017 22:57

Ooooh sorry bum flap! Just saw it's your name! Haha will go with what you've said although 50 comments or so on this post make me feel a little less stressed about pronouncing it wrong! It's obviously a bit tricky!

OP posts:
BumFlapBob · 31/08/2017 06:42

Ines is Inn-nis

No it isn't and that's the most annoying way people mispronounce it too.

BumFlapBob · 31/08/2017 06:43

Where is your friend from op? If she's English and has just chosen the name because she likes it she may well think it's pronounced in-ezz or in-iss or Christ knows what.

LadyPug · 31/08/2017 08:32

Yeah she's uk based, I can't wait to find out how she pronounces it now, I'll report back!!
