A friend just named her daughter this and I meet her tomorrow! How do you pronounce it?!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
OnNaturesCourse · 31/08/2017 09:12

I'm UK based and my previous post is how it's said around where I am.

I know of people spelling it every way I stated and it's pronounced as I've stated.

It's a hard one as Scottish / Spanish pronouncations are very similar as are the spellings. Perhaps easier to just ask? Or wait until someone else says it lol xx

OnNaturesCourse · 31/08/2017 09:16

According to Google there's another way...

Ines
Gender: F
Pronunciation: ee-NEZ
Meaning of Ines: "pure, virginal"

😂 like I say I think it depends on what variation of the name she has picked (ie. Spanish, Scottish etc) It would seem the sounds and spelling of the variations get muddled?

indulgentberries · 31/08/2017 09:21

Inn-ezzz - at least that's how the English one I know pronounces it.

BumFlapBob · 31/08/2017 09:34

There is no scottish variation because it is not a scottish name.

Innes is, but that's not the same.

OnNaturesCourse · 31/08/2017 09:38

That's what I mean about all the variations and sounds getting muddled...

To my understanding Inez/Ines was Spanish. But I've heard those spellings get used with the Scottish sound before and vise versa.

Innes is the Scottish version to me, but I may be wrong, and to me it's Inn-Ness.

Definitely think you're best to double check OP

BumFlapBob · 31/08/2017 09:40

Yes but Innes and Ines are not the same name, that's my point.

Ontopofthesunset · 31/08/2017 09:42

Ee-nez, but I wouldn't probably stress the Nez as much as a real Spanish person.

The boys' name is usually spelt with 2 ns and pronounced In-niss (stress on the In).

OnNaturesCourse · 31/08/2017 09:45

Yet... They are used the same. That's my point. People often use Innes but say Ines, or use Ines and say Innes etc etc which is why it's best to ask. I'm trying to say there is a lot of complication around the name. I should know too, i grew up with a variation on it. I deal with it daily.

BumFlapBob · 31/08/2017 09:56

Real Spanish people don't stress Nez at all, unless it's spelt Inez.

MammieBear · 31/08/2017 10:01

Eye-nez would be correct.

BumFlapBob · 31/08/2017 10:05

Eye-nez would be correct.

No it definitely wouldn't.

DumbledoresApprentice · 31/08/2017 10:09

I've taught three, all definitely pronounced like inn-ezz (the i sound is longer than in but not quite een). All three were from Latin American rather than Spanish backgrounds though which may well be relevant.

TobleroneBoo · 31/08/2017 10:14

I've only heard this mentioned in Hairspray before, and it was Eye-nez 🙈

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/08/2017 10:51

I think there is probably a lot of variation, best just to ask OP. I know a Ineez, pronounced In-eees, probably because of the extra "e" it was an old family name, spelt and pronounced that way.

Foniks · 31/08/2017 12:41

I knew a girl with this name, everybody called her ee-ness or ee-nez she didn't mind either, but pronounced it ee-ness herself

AmysTiara · 31/08/2017 12:43

I've only ever known one and she pronounced it Ee-nez

JamOrCreamFirst · 31/08/2017 13:38

BumFlap the thing is you can take any name these days and the parents will pronounce it however the hell they like. For all we know, the OP's friend pronounces it "Steve".

LadyPug · 31/08/2017 15:04

Thank fuck, she actually knows how it's said!!!!!!!

WhyOhWine · 31/08/2017 15:17

DD went to nursery with an Inez and an Ines. Pronounced differently. The mother of Ines was very clear that it was an ess sound at the end not ezz (I think she had a South American connection). It was not difficult to remember this after hearing/being told once.
I always liked both names.
