How popular is 'Poppy'?

DH and I both really love the name but I am concerned that it seems to be in the top 10 in every list I read. I'm not sure I'd want her to be one of 5 Poppy's in her class!

Any experiences of how many Poppy's there are around in real life?

According to the ONS it was 10th place in 2015, having gone down from 2014 so it is popular but losing popularity. They'll also be Poppi and Poppies around.

There is more variation in girls names than boys (so there are more Oliver's than Amelia's - both number 1) so less chance of two Poppy's in a class.

I've never come across any Poppy's at all the baby/toddler activities I go to. Neither have I come across any Mia or Jessica's which are also top 10.

Depends on the region you're in really, go on bounty regional baby names that should tell you if it's used much where you are, I personally have never met or heard of one we're in Merseyside.

I've never met a poppy
Adult or child

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 25/08/2017 10:24

I have never met a Poppy either, it's lovely.
Some people use Poppy, as a nick name for Penelope.

BellaGoth · 25/08/2017 10:26

I have a Poppy. Really don't care if there are lots of Poppies in her class. There were 3 other girls in my class at primary school and it honestly wasn't a problem!

I've not met another Poppy yet (DD is only 1 though)

If you love it, use it!

GotToGetMyFingerOut · 25/08/2017 10:27

I know three poppy's. One is nine, one is eight and one is newborn.

wendz86 · 25/08/2017 10:27

My eldest is a Poppy. At nursery there were two of them and also at her gymnastics class as a toddler but she's the only one in her year at school and there's only one other she knows about in her school so not as common as you would think.

BellaGoth · 25/08/2017 10:27

Sorry, 3 other girls with my name.

There were more than 3 girls in my class!

nauticant · 25/08/2017 10:27

It really does depend on where you are. In some places it's like the fields of Flanders.

fluffypenguinbelly · 25/08/2017 10:29

I know 4 Poppys.

Aged 5, 4, 2 and a dog.

wendz86 · 25/08/2017 10:38

When I got my younger daughter registered it had on the wall the most common names in my area so maybe more common in some areas,

Hopelass · 25/08/2017 10:39

My cat is called Poppy 😁 sorry not helpful

welshweasel · 25/08/2017 10:40

There's two in DS's nursery room (he's 1).

user1483387154 · 25/08/2017 10:41

Only ones I know are cats and dogs.

endehors · 25/08/2017 10:47

There seem to be plenty, it being a long standing top 100 name and currently top 10. Go by the ONS stats if in doubt.

Glumglowworm · 25/08/2017 11:19

It's a gorgeous name but I know several under 10

ClumsyCow · 25/08/2017 11:25

I also have a cat named Poppy. Grin did consider it for 21 year daughter all those years ago, but DH was not keen

Sophronia · 25/08/2017 16:10

The only one I know is 25!

AreWeThereYet000 · 25/08/2017 16:19

I know only one and she's 6.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 25/08/2017 16:25

I know one child Poppy she's 5.
I have a cat called Poppy and next door's dog is called Poppy.

chowmeinchick · 25/08/2017 16:26

It's not very poppy-ular where I live. I don't know any.

kookiecookie3 · 25/08/2017 19:04

I haven't heard it much around toddler groups, although the other week I was volunteering on my local maternity ward and in one night I visited two Poppys.

feellikeanalien · 25/08/2017 19:10

My DDs best friend is Poppy. She is 7 and the only one in the school. There was one other in a different year but she has now left.

RightOnTheEdge · 25/08/2017 19:15

There are three Poppys that I know of in my DC's school.
It's a lovely name, I wanted to call dd Poppy but dp said no way. He's foreign and wouldn't believe me it was a real name Hmm Grin

Keychanges · 25/08/2017 19:16
