How popular is 'Poppy'?

DH and I both really love the name but I am concerned that it seems to be in the top 10 in every list I read. I'm not sure I'd want her to be one of 5 Poppy's in her class!

Any experiences of how many Poppy's there are around in real life?

I know quite a few. Prob 5 or 6. Makes me think of Poppy Pants.

I know three called Poppy. All are in their very late teens/early 20s.. I'd assumed it would now be going out of fashion as name, but perhaps the ones I know were just ahead of their time!

My cat's called Poppy and I used to have one in my form at school. I think it's a lovely name!

Huffletuff · 25/08/2017 19:29

I've only ever taught one Poppy.

elQuintoConyo · 25/08/2017 19:47

I know one girl named Poppy aged 10.

And one Irish Wolfhound aged 8 Grin

Both fabulous.

ForalltheSaints · 25/08/2017 19:48

If you do choose Poppy, please spell it Poppy.

mistermagpie · 25/08/2017 19:50

I don't know any that aren't cats or dogs.

TallulahBetty · 25/08/2017 19:52

Loads!

scrivette · 25/08/2017 19:53

I only know one who is one.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 25/08/2017 19:57

I have a Poppy. She is 6 & the only one in her year group at school (60 children).

It isn't exactly a rare name - you will meet other Poppys about but it's never been a problem here.

That said, both DSs have names that have been pretty consistently top 5 over the last 20 years or so & we don't meet many with their names either - but there are two girls called Roxy in DS2's year, and I would consider that really unusual Confused.

I have a poppy and she's the only one in her year group of 60. I think there was one other at nursery. Then again my oldest has I think the most popular name before Olivia took over and she never had one with the same name in her year group at nursery or school. Similar but not a match!

Toomanycats99 · 25/08/2017 20:04

@RightOnTheEdge I work with many Europeans and a French lady spent 5 years thinking it was a pet name for her - had no idea it was a real name!

MegRam · 25/08/2017 20:07

Wow, thank you so much for all the replies -- really helpful.

I really love the name, so I think we'll go with it anyway and see how many others we come across along the way!

Hotpinkangel19 · 26/08/2017 15:26

We are going with Poppy - Poppy Rose. I love it

BlueberryPuffin · 26/08/2017 15:31

I never knew Poppy was a top 10 name. I'm so surprised. Never met one and never thought of it as a popular name at all.

RaspberryBeret34 · 26/08/2017 15:36

I went to University with one but don't know any others, children or adults! My DC is 5 and I haven't come across any in his school.

Go for it if you love it, you could choose a name that is 50th or something and just happen to have another in her class!

glitterlips1 · 04/09/2017 19:11

I have an 8 year old Poppy, no one else called it at her school. I know the name is becoming popular though because I see it all the time in the online newspaper birth announcements! I suppose if you want a name that isn't popular then you will have to go with a name not many people like! Hmm

FlippertyJibbet · 04/09/2017 19:17

I'm a 42 year old Poppy. I'm also a solicitor as absolutely everyone told my dm you'd never have a judge (there's still time!) with such a ridiculous name. Who's laughing now, eh?

I first started hearing dc's with the name about 15 years ago and love that there are loads around now. In my dc's school there are no Poppy's though. I quite often hear the name yelled when at soft play though.

Chocolatecake12 · 04/09/2017 19:30

I know 3 - 2 are 10 in ds's class
The other is 13
It's a pretty name. That's why it's popular but that shouldn't put you off.
