DramaAlpaca · 22/07/2017 21:26

Eye-ah

00100001 · 22/07/2017 21:27

Second, follow on question that I forgot to post originally

What are your thoughts about the name and spelling

Ay (as in hay)
Ya with the a as in cat

But I've never seen it as a name.

Eye-ah. I would say Ay-ah if it were spelled Aya or Ayah.

MagnumAddict · 22/07/2017 21:31

Eye-ah

Floggingmolly · 22/07/2017 21:31

It sounds like Hiya! in a cockney accent. Awful.

ijustwannadance · 22/07/2017 21:32

That's Scouse for hiya!

CancellyMcChequeface · 22/07/2017 21:33

Eye-ah.

Geek alert: it means 'hail!' in Quenya Elvish. That's my only association; I've never encountered it as a name before.

MommaGee · 22/07/2017 21:34

Ay-ah and yeah to close to hiya

HeyRoly · 22/07/2017 21:35

Yep, "hiya" without the H!

pelvicpromise · 22/07/2017 21:37

Like Hiya without the 'H'

user1468353179 · 22/07/2017 21:41

I-ya.. That what the call her in Game of Thrones.

Jamhandprints · 22/07/2017 21:41

It's a fine name. Nothing wrong with it, doesnt sound tacky.

SteppingOnToes · 22/07/2017 21:45

It's Liverpudlian for hello - do not saddle your poor child with this name...

00100001 · 22/07/2017 21:56

The Y would provide the "eye" sound, not the "yuh" sound

So 'Eye-uh'. Not 'Eye-yuh' iyswim?

ChildofASD · 22/07/2017 22:01

Aiya pronounced eye-ya is Chinese for mugwort Hmm

Tilly35 · 22/07/2017 22:01

It's hello in the Manchester area too- like hiya but dropping the 'h'

emochild · 22/07/2017 22:05

You can't ask how people would pronounce it and then tell them they are pronouncing it wrong

I'd put money on the majority of northerners me included pronouncing it like hiya (which doesn't have a strong 'yuh' sound anyway)

Like ayia napa

00100001 · 22/07/2017 22:11

I was just trying to clarify the pronunciation that I posted. Not that anyone else was "wrong" :)

I have a 'rule' about names. In that if it could be pronounced more than one way, I wouldn't use it (Tanya or Maya for example)

:)
