How would you pronounce Alicia

Hi all,

My husband and I are trying to choose baby names as we haven't come up with many options and LO is due next week. My husband's top girls name, which I'm also quite keen on, is Alicia, which we both pronounce as A-Liss-ee-a. However it has dawned on me that some might pronounce it A-lee-sha. Would be great to get some outsider opinions on how others would pronounce it. Thanks in advance!

A-liss-ee-a

AmysTiara · 05/07/2017 09:02

I'd assume Aleesha but I know it can be pronounced both ways so I'd be unsure.

Zebrasinpyjamas · 05/07/2017 09:02

Same as I love Venice above.

elQuintoConyo · 05/07/2017 09:03

I have only known Alicias pronounced a-liss-ee-a.

But then Felicia isn't pronounced fe-luss-ee-a Hmm

I'd choose the pronunciation you prefer and then correct people if they say the other. I can't see it being a big problem.

Congratulations Flowers

ASDismynormality · 05/07/2017 09:03

Same as you OP.

Lemondrop99 · 05/07/2017 09:04

I'd automatically say A-Lee-Sha. However I know it can be said both ways so I might ask.

Oliversmumsarmy · 05/07/2017 09:05

I know an Al-ee-sha it is spelled Alesha

Alicia is Al-i-see-ya

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 05/07/2017 09:05

Same as Amys - if I had to try saying it without hearing it first, i'd assume Aleesha, but I'd also know it might be A-liss-ee-a and so would be paying attention to check which.

ShutupanddriveM5 · 05/07/2017 09:07

A-liss-e-uh

Wherehasmydevilcomefrom · 05/07/2017 09:07

I'd pronounce it A-liss-ee-a. Although I once knew someone called Alicia who pronounced it Aleesha.

CrowyMcCrowFace · 05/07/2017 09:08

Mine is A-liss-ee-a.

She sometimes gets Aleesha, but it's no big deal. Weirdly it's easier now we're abroad because it's obviously a 'foreign' name, which people will ask how to pronounce rather than one people see written down & think they know.

(it's slightly more of a niggle that Ali is a super popular boys' name here, so she's often known as Girl Ali to distinguish her from 3 other Alis in her class!)

I've been told that A-liss-ee-a is the 'posh' pronunciation & Aleesha less so Hmm. Personally, I think they're both pretty - if dd preferred the second pronunciation I wouldn't lose sleep over it!

grasspigeons · 05/07/2017 09:08

I say A liss ee a . I'm aware it can be pronounced aleesha so I might ask but my default is the way you want. I'm very rarely introduced to people as a written name - normally it's a verbal introduction.

SillySausage1 · 05/07/2017 09:09

I say aleesha because the only Alicia I've ever known said it that way. But people will say it however you say it so don't be put off the name if you love it.

MyBreadIsEggy · 05/07/2017 09:09

I see and immediately think "A-lee-sha"

But then I went to school with an Alicia pn "A-liss-ia"

RockyBird · 05/07/2017 09:09

Aleesha

ScarletBegonia1234 · 05/07/2017 09:10

It's my mum's name. She's al-eesha. She's Irish if that makes a difference?

BlahBlahBlahEtc · 05/07/2017 09:11

Alice-ee--ah

MadisonAvenue · 05/07/2017 09:11

A-leesha

TabbyTurmoil · 05/07/2017 09:12

I'd assume Al iss ia. Haven't met any Aleeshas (but did watch the Good Wife).

Littlepumpkinpie · 05/07/2017 09:14

I pronounce it A-liss-ee-a

SisterMoonshine · 05/07/2017 09:16

Aleesha

BlackbirdSingsInTheDeadOfNight · 05/07/2017 09:16

I know an A-liss-ia, however she lives abroad and some of her other friends call her Aleesha.

To me, it's another version of Alice - which isn't pronounced Aleesh! However the comment by the pp above about the pronunciation of Felicia is interesting - I hadn't thought of it like that before.

HairsprayQueen · 05/07/2017 09:18

I always said A-liss-ee-a but I think a lot of people nowadays will be more familiar with Alicia Keys pronunciation

RuggerHug · 05/07/2017 13:14

A-lee-see-ah. Going by responses here though I appear to have had it wrong all my lifeBlush I don't know anyone named it but or it could be my accent but that's how I would say it.

lalaloopyhead · 05/07/2017 13:19

a - lee -see -ah - at least that is how the two I know pronounces it.
