How would you pronounce Alicia

Hi all,

My husband and I are trying to choose baby names as we haven't come up with many options and LO is due next week. My husband's top girls name, which I'm also quite keen on, is Alicia, which we both pronounce as A-Liss-ee-a. However it has dawned on me that some might pronounce it A-lee-sha. Would be great to get some outsider opinions on how others would pronounce it. Thanks in advance!

To be fair mine gets A-lees-ee-ah a lot here in the ME - I & e are not quite as distinct in Arabic. So almost halfway between the two obvious options.

My name ends in - ine & is pronounced with an - een here!

So I think some names morph a bit depending on where you are - neither is wrong.

Only you can decide if it'll irritate you/if you'll be bothered enough to want to correct people.

Awesome name, obvs Wink

Thanks everyone for your input - more than I expected say it the way I do!

A-liss-ee-ah.

BingBongBingBong · 05/07/2017 13:47

My sister is called Alicia and we pronounce it 'Ah-lee-shu'

blueskyinmarch · 05/07/2017 13:51

I would pronounce it Al-eesh-a.

mintich · 05/07/2017 13:52

Aleesha

Smidge001 · 05/07/2017 13:53

Wow, I'm surprised. I would pronounce it al-ish-a, with the emphasis on the ish.

Isn't that how everyone pronounces Alicia silverstone?

Same as I'd pronounce morticia (mortisha).

JennyOnAPlate · 05/07/2017 13:56

I know a four year old alissia and have an aunt aleesha.

I think the conclusion is that it can be pronounced either way.

RedStripeIassie · 05/07/2017 14:00

It's a perfect name either way!
I pronounce it Al ee sha but I know of two Alicia's who are al e see ya as well.

HappyFlappy · 05/07/2017 14:00

A-liss-ee-a

Anything else is just wrong.

WellTidy · 05/07/2017 14:05

A-liss-ee-a.

But I got that people will say A-lee-sha because of Alicia Keys.

Sophronia · 05/07/2017 16:11

Ah-LISS-ee-uh

BeyondThePage · 05/07/2017 16:15

My sister is Alicia - pronounced Alice (as in Wonderland)-ya (shorter than ee-a at the end)

so - Alice-ya

MaryWortleyMontagu · 05/07/2017 16:16

A LISS ee ah

Roughlyroughrough · 05/07/2017 16:16

Al - lee - see - a

Roughlyroughrough · 05/07/2017 16:17

Alysia or Elysia is nearer to the name you like.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 05/07/2017 16:18

However the parents want it pronounced - it's not hard to remember, people should only need to be told once.

Roughlyroughrough · 05/07/2017 16:19

people should only need to be told once. Grin

SasBel · 05/07/2017 16:19

Another vote for Alis sia here.
Congratulations btw!

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2017 16:20

I'd say it Al-isha not Alissya or Aleesha. Just as I would pronounce Patricia Patrisha or Felicia Felisha. But Alicia will get pronounced Alisha, Alissya, Aleesha so I would spell it Alissia if that's how you want it said.

RhubardGin · 05/07/2017 16:25

I would pronounce it as Aleesha.

Never known any different. A few girls in my school were called Alicia and they all pronounced it with the 'leash' sound.

Maybe try a different spelling?

AceholeRimmer · 05/07/2017 16:56

I would pronounce Ali-ee-sha.

AceholeRimmer · 05/07/2017 16:56

^^Oops I wouldn't pronounce it like that Grin I meant Al-eee-sha.

AceholeRimmer · 05/07/2017 16:58

I agree with spelling it either Alysia or Alissia!

TheSeaTheSkyTheSeaTheSkyyyyyy · 05/07/2017 17:01

I would naturally say A-lee-sha until corrected.
