The honest truth on this name

So I really like the name Romana and so does DH. I know my family will hate it though because I'm predictably weird with my choices for everything in life. I know it's not completely out there but it's more unique than most names, at least in Blighty. I think it has more following in Slovenia, Czech Republic and a few other countries.

How do you guys feel about it?

I know there are alternatives: Rowenna, Rowena, Rosalina, Ramona etc but I'm not taken. It has to be Romana.

I didn't get the pizza thing. What about Rowanna?

MaroonPencil · 23/05/2017 18:43

Doctor Who for me. I always think of the blonde haired one.

I used to want to call my daughter Nyssa, when I was little - I didn't have one in the end!

ifigoup · 23/05/2017 18:44

I like it too. Margerita is a pizza too but that doesn't stop it being a name! I also like Romina, and Ruxandra which I think is Romanian.

GertrudeBelle · 23/05/2017 18:50

Don't like it, I'm afraid.

Romily?

Littlepond · 23/05/2017 18:56

I like it. I like Ramona too.

KrsJd · 23/05/2017 18:58

I love Romana but she's my SIL and I love her Grin her nickname is Mana which is nice I think!

MudCity · 23/05/2017 19:04

I like it.

Riversleep · 23/05/2017 19:05

Id forgotten how much I love Ramona until this thread! I thought of Doctor Who too when I saw Romana, but I suspect it's only old whovians who were alive in ye olden days will think of that now!

Paddybare · 23/05/2017 19:06

Pizza I'm afraid, can't think of anything else.

ImpetuousBride · 23/05/2017 19:16

I once worked with someone called Romana - I think the name really suited her as she always seemed a strong confident woman (like a Roman empress )

FeedTheSharkAndItWillBite · 23/05/2017 19:19

Riversleep

Same! And now I'm wondering if this thread didn't just... throw a wench in our plans for naming DD2.

OnlyRose · 23/05/2017 19:20

I like it. I'm sure there was a Blue Peter presenter called Romana when I was a kid. I would never have thought of pizza.

Woodling · 23/05/2017 19:27

I think it's a nice name though I also understand why the pizza springs to mind! If that puts you off have you thought about Romala? I think that's lovely and very similar

grasspigeons · 23/05/2017 19:28

It's alright. I'm like most names though. I do see the pizza link

reluctantlondoner · 23/05/2017 19:32

Romana makes me think of Romany gypsy. Not a bad thing but just a word association that you may not have thought of...

sauceyorange · 23/05/2017 19:35

Hot shots. Sorry!

chocatoo · 23/05/2017 19:35

I love Ramona - quite sassy sounding. Romana makes me think of Romaine lettuce...sorry

Bluntness100 · 23/05/2017 19:37

I'm not a fan I have to say, I always think would I want to be called that, and I wouldn't. Plus I keep wanting to say Ramona, I think folks will mix it up or she will get teased at school for being named after a pizza.

countycouncil · 23/05/2017 19:39

I would think it's a nod to Roma Gypsies.

MerlinEmrys · 23/05/2017 19:40

It's a pizza, but I do love the name Romy x

Copperas · 23/05/2017 19:40

I love it

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/05/2017 19:41

The Doctor Who assistant, Romana's full name was Romanadeveratnalunda. I just wanted to show off that I know this.

CardinalSin · 23/05/2017 19:45

Damn! SDTG beat me to it!

Love the name, but you should make sure it's the full version...

CardinalSin · 23/05/2017 19:46

Actually, I think it's Romanadvoratrelundar

lorelairoryemily · 23/05/2017 19:47

Personally I wouldn't choose it, but if you both love it then go for it, people will keep their opinions to themselves when she's here and named, just don't tell anyone beforehand and give them the opportunity to say anything negative
