Is Rafferty incredibly posh?

I just came across this in the ONS data and was surprised how far down the list it was. Is it very very very posh? I quite like it...

I suppose it sounds like the name a raffish (geddit?) Victorian moustache twirling, lady seducing, villain might have.

This, exactly. Not posh at all. All it suggests is that this is someone who almost certainly doesn't live in Ireland (unless this person would also call their male offspring Smith or Jones).

And thanks a lot to whoever up the thread said 'Delaney's bloody Donkey'. I am now looking at spending an evening driving myself mad singing 'There was Riley, pushing it, shoving it, shushing it' etc etc.

If you called your kid Rafferty I wouldn't think you were posh I'd think you were about if a twat!

I know a 13 year old Raffy which I think of as more of a 'cool' name and it really suits him.

But if you like the name why would you be concerned about any implied social connotations?

To answer your OP, I would most definitely not think "posh" if I saw the name Rafferty on a CV. I would tend to assume you had Irish ancestry somewhere and that it was a family name.

There are well to do people in both places, you know. Southern England doesn't have the monopoly on all posh people.

Aye of course there are posh Scottish and Irish people, but the OP was would you associate Rafferty with being posh, and the honest answer is no.

The "posh" Scottish and Irish people I know variously called their boys: Cameron, Fraser, Calum, Jamie, Connor, Ruairi and Donnchadh.

Rafferty isn't posh, it's more East London hipster.

Yeah of course. But Rafferty is a bog standard Irish surname in the way Johnson for example is a standard English surname. There may be lots of posh people with the surname Johnson but by itself it doesn't make a statement of poshness.
