Is Rafferty incredibly posh?

I just came across this in the ONS data and was surprised how far down the list it was. Is it very very very posh? I quite like it...

It would probably be considered try-hard by quite a few people though - I say that as someone whose DC all have what MN considers try-hard names. I'm trying to find a one syllable name for as yet unborn son, and finding it utterly impossible.

The best thing about Rafferty is you get to use Raffy for a nn, which is so cute.

I wasn't allowed Rafferty as DH insisted, quite rightly, that it's a surname.

Rafferty is not posh at all. That's not to say that no-one posh would ever choose it, I'm sure some have, but it is not a posh name per se. I'd say it's more of a trendy, try-hard name if I had to categorise it at all.

What does 'posh' actually mean?

Many people on Mumsnet find names like Sebastian, Reuben Hugo or Quentin 'posh', but I know mostly 'common' 'normal' boys with those names.

In other words, isn't it the person who might be posh, not their name?

Rafferty sounds a bit "celeb" to me - so no, I wouldn't say posh. If you want to sound posh, you need St John (pronounced Sinjin) as a middle name....

Ginger Spice has a Montgomery so that can't be posh either . . .

Agree that 'posh' people go for very plain names that three million other people in their family already have, like 'James'.

No, it's thinking it about certain types of people that's considered offensive. If you are going to think it at least have the courage to say it!

It's about as posh as Murphy, or Cassidy, or any other Irish surname.

I felt a bit deflated reading responses on here about Rafferty but then on another thread someone asked for people's fave boys names and it appeared twice in the first few replies
