How do you pronounce Violet?

I can't pronounce it Vi-o-let without sounding like I'm from Cornwall?

I say it as Vi-let (2 syllables) and wondered if that was an acceptable pronunciation?

Vi lut

Xjustmex · 22/04/2017 22:07

Vi let

Buntysoven · 22/04/2017 22:08

I'm with Sally. 3 syllables Vi o let the o almost an a though

vitaminC · 22/04/2017 22:29

It's a very short o, almost via-lut. Like violent without the n.

Chavelita · 22/04/2017 22:33

The unstressed middle sound is a schwa, but it's definitely there in my accent. I don't think Violet sounds very nice pronounced Vile-et.

Wondermoomin · 22/04/2017 22:33

Violin is three syllables!

Violet and violent have very short 'o' sounds so can sound like 2 or 3 syllables.

Alexandra87 · 22/04/2017 22:45

Vi a let geordie accent though so I say things differently to most

Sophronia · 22/04/2017 22:46

Vy-lut

gillybeanz · 22/04/2017 22:47

Violent without the n

Lochan · 22/04/2017 22:50

Vi-let

Belle89 · 22/04/2017 22:50

Vi let though I am from Cornwall so probably do have a proper accent going on 😂

Kazzawazza69 · 23/04/2017 17:17

Vi-let

Bloomed · 23/04/2017 17:18

Vi o let

HarrietVane99 · 23/04/2017 17:20

So how do all the Vi-let and vi-lin people pronounce 'viola'?

alltouchedout · 23/04/2017 17:21

Vy-lut, but I always feel I should be saying vi-oh-let.

Lemondrop09 · 23/04/2017 18:06

Same as vitaminC, I say it's more like Via-let. Not dropping the O completely but making it shorter than in violin, so it comes out more like an A.

Ecureuil · 23/04/2017 18:11

Sand as vitaminC. Definitely three syllables but the middle one is very short.
I've never heard anyone say 'vy-lin' for violin! There are three syllables!

Ecureuil · 23/04/2017 18:11

*Same

treaclesoda · 23/04/2017 18:13

I would probably say 'Vyalet' Grin (although the 'ah' sound is very very short, more of a breathing out sound than an actual syllable).

And 'vi-uh-lin' (although most of the older people I know would say 'vile-in')

And viola would be 'vy-oh-la'.

So, in conclusion, three words with similar spelling but I pronounce them totally differently Confused

User543210 · 23/04/2017 18:17

Vi-lut
Vi-lunt
Vi-a-lin

mathanxiety · 23/04/2017 22:53

Vi-uh-let

FeedTheSharkAndItWIllBite · 23/04/2017 23:34

VIE-ə-lət

Soph1a · 23/04/2017 23:35

Vi lit

Rockaby · 24/04/2017 08:00

Violent without the n for me too, (I still love the name though)!

SoupDragon · 24/04/2017 08:25

It's Vi-uh-let for me but the uh ( or short a, I'm not Sure!) is more of a breath than a full syllable.
