Emer Lily- Opinions?

liadaintheirishpoetess · 19/04/2017 12:34

I think we've just about settled on Emer Lily (pronounced EE-mer). We've gone back and forth with Orla and Emer but we've taken the plunge and decided Emer's probably the best. What do you think of Emer Lily?

Our other children are Killian Joshua, Aoife Rose, Aislinn Juliet, Ruairi Benjamin and Lachlan Isaac. Does her name go well with theirs?
General opinions would be much appreciated.
Thank you Smile

I think it's a bit bland but inoffensive. Will it be Emer or Emer Lily? I think the latter is a bit of a mouthful

Its a lovely name - there's quite a few in my kids classes (both spellings - Emer and Eimear). I also know Emer and Aoife siblings. Is Lily which I also like going to be used as part of the name - said on a daily basis, or is it just a middle name? Both names are grand, they go nicely with your other kids but I don't usually stress about that. Once the kids get up a bit they don't usually say their own name with all their siblings, it's just parents that do. I much prefer a Emer to Orla. I find Orla a bit dated.

Emer Lily is a beautiful name. I wouldn't spell it Ima. That might encourage the pronunciation 'I'm a' which isn't nearly as pretty. The Irish spelling is lovely too.

villainousbroodmare · 19/04/2017 19:30

Emer is a gorgeous name. My cat is called Emer and I am strongly considering taking the name back from her for a future daughter. I really like all of your kids' name but am really not a fan of Lily and not sure that it goes.

TheAntiBoop · 19/04/2017 19:38

Like the names but not together. Sounds like someone trying to pronounce Emily in a crazy way. I think Emer needs a longer middle name

polkadotdelight · 19/04/2017 19:42

I love the name Emer, it was on my list when I was pregnant with DS - there was a lovely doctor on 24 hours in A&E with the name. I don't think Emer Lily 'goes' though, to me I think a single syllable middle name would be nicer.

StealingYourWiFi · 19/04/2017 20:32

I've met an Emer on holiday once, it's a lovely name.

BrutusMcDogface · 19/04/2017 20:44

I've got a friend called emer. Lovely girl and lovely name, especially when said with a gorgeous Irish accent! Smile there are loads of orlas here in the south of England at the moment. Emer is better imo!

The pronunciation won't be a problem at all!

liadaintheirishpoetess · 19/04/2017 20:44

No the name will not be said together. I don't think we will get rid of Lily as it's the name of the baby my ma lost when she (Lily) was three weeks old.

Ps- wow, six kids!! Shock

BrutusMcDogface · 19/04/2017 20:47

Flowers what a lovely tribute to your lost sister.

I also agree with pp that lily goes better with emer as not so many "l" sounds.

DramaAlpaca · 19/04/2017 20:49

It's a gorgeous name, & you're in Ireland so there'll be no pronunciation issues.

liadaintheirishpoetess · 19/04/2017 20:50

Grin @BrutusMcDogFace we're Catholic! But also technically only 5 pregnancies as Aoife and Aislinn are twins. Thanks for advice.

Emer is gorgeous. Emer Lily rolls a bit together, but both names are lovely.
To a PP - Ima would be pronounced EYE-ma, wouldn't it?
I do love Irish names and all your names particularly, OP Smile

Thank you @Mollie85!!

Lovely name!! Goes really well with all your other wee ones names! Definitely prefer it over orla!! Emer seems more girly and feminine!

Elphame · 19/04/2017 23:40

It sounds a bit similar to Aoife though which could cause some confusion at times

DramaAlpaca · 20/04/2017 01:12

Aoife & Emer are not in the least bit similar, certainly not in an Irish accent.

Mclaren37 · 20/04/2017 07:11

Emer is a gorgeous name and goes beautifully with your other children's names. Don't worry about pronounciation at all, I'm English and was educated on how to pronounce it as soon as I met my first Emer. I know three in London now. It's a lovely classic name. Emer Lilly flows nicely.

frums · 20/04/2017 07:15

I like Emer but I would not pair it with lily as it looks like a weird attempt to spell Emily.

eurochick · 20/04/2017 07:41

Elmer is a pretty common Irish name but I'd never heard it growing up in England until I went to university. After that I met several. Emer Lily does look like a corruption of Emily to my eyes but is probably fine in Ireland as Emer is so well known there.

MitzyLeFrouf · 20/04/2017 11:30

I'm an Emer and I have never been mistaken for an Aoife an Emily or an Emma! It sounds nothing like those names and there will certainly be no pronunciation issues in Ireland as it's such a common name. In the UK I get eee-ma as opposed to the Irish eee-mur.

MrsMeeseeks · 20/04/2017 11:42

Both lovely names but I don't think they sound good together.

BasicBetty · 20/04/2017 12:33

I think it sounds lovely and works perfectly with your other DCs names. I absolutely love Orla though (sorry!).
