Would you use the name anyway?

So I'm 34 weeks pg and if it's a boy, we really only have one name picked. However a friend of mine is 35 weeks pg and last week told me that her boys name is the same as ours. She told me first and I just sort of said 'oh how funny, that's the name we have picked too!'. She didn't really respond.

Factors for consideration:
A) both or other of us might have a girl anyway
B) we are friends but not particularly close ones, don't see each other that often and mainly socialise within a group that contains people that both of us are better friends with than we are with each other (if that makes sense).
C) our children won't go to the same school (she will go with the catholic school, we won't).
D) we have very very similar surnames, we're in Scotland so think McDonald and McDougal
E) and because you can't have a baby name thread without saying the name - it's Hamish. So not super common but not a rarity around these parts either!

I'd give each of your children their own name.

If it's the only name you've picked, if you still love it when your lo is born, I'd use it. You may not know these friends forever. I didn't name my DD a name I wanted because we knew someone with a DD with that name and the same nn but we moved away when our DD was 3. We don't know these people now.

My Sil has named my nephew 2 of our top favourite names that we almost used for our ds, if we were to have another we would use one of them still neither of us own the name 😂

My best friend's son has exactly the same name as my son. Hers is about 5 years older but it didn't stop me. It is a common name, normally in the top 10 regularly.

Just use it. It's a great name. The other people, or you, may move house, or you may just not see much of each other. I really wouldn't worry.

I'd still use that name ... to can bet she'll either have a boy or they'll change their mind, but even if not it doesn't matter, my husbands good friend had a boy called Cameron ... we met him well after we'd painstakingly chosen that name if we ever had a boy ... when we did we still loved the name so went with it (mentioned it to him and his wife and they didn't care ... probably because he's about 10 years older lol) and it's absolutely fine ... go with the name you want for your child

Id still use it. Imagine you deliver a boy first, and dont use it "just incase" then she either has a girl or has a boy and has also decided not to use it.

I over-thought my kids' names and if anyone in a 10 mile radius used the name I wanted, I changed it. It seems so silly now!

She's probably been wondering what your choice is and told you so she was in there first just in case you liked it too and was therefore hoping you wouldn't use it.

That's what I did when I told my friend our preferred name.

However if my friend had then said that it was her preferred name too it would have been up to me to decide if it was an issue for me and therefore whether or not something I wanted to change it not her.

So that's a long winded way of saying stick with your choice, she is feee to do the same or make a different one.

Alternatively, you could use Seamas - the nominative (proper name, ie Gaelic for James) of which Hamish is the vocative ( the form of the word used when talking to someone). Very sorry if that sounds schoolmarmy - I'm sure you knew that, anyway.

Hamish is getting popular in some non-Scottish circles. That's not an issue for me, but it may be for some. I rather prefer Seamas. As I'm sure you also know, it's pronounced Shay-muhss.
