Laura Ashley dresses and velvet hairbands with flat pumps Grin

zen1 · 02/12/2016 19:41

Sorry to say, it is still commonly used as an insult.

ClarissaDarling · 02/12/2016 19:43

Are Sloane and Blair not characters in Gossip Girl??

Nospringflower · 02/12/2016 19:44

Yes Sloane is pearls and loafers - Princess Diana being ultimate Sloane ranger.

I like Blair for a boy - ok for a girl.

Pugsymalone · 02/12/2016 19:44

BratFarrarsPony I have really never heard of Sloane Ranger! Until now of course ,

I actually really like Sloane but I'd say it's hard to pull off of your child will be brought up in Britain.

Blair is a boys name despite what Mrs Lively might think

Marmalade85 · 02/12/2016 19:56

They sound very American

trufflepiggy · 02/12/2016 19:57

Sloane is an insult where I'm from

Pugsymalone · 02/12/2016 19:58

CockneyViv no chance as much as Id love to live in Britain ,
Baby will be born and bred in dublin !

Oh I was going to say Blair till a pp reminded me about Ferris Bueller's day off! Sloane is cool. The Sloane Ranger thing... hmmm not ideal, but I wonder how many people really use the term any more?

AddToBasket · 02/12/2016 20:30

Both are awful, sorry

CancellyMcChequeface · 02/12/2016 20:34

I'm not keen on either. If I had to choose one, I'd go with Sloane, because Sloane Rangers are a slightly better association than Tony Blair.

From your longer list, I like Mila. :)

lizzieoak · 02/12/2016 20:42

Sounds very American to me as well - and that's not often a good thing w names (imo).

viques · 02/12/2016 20:55

Sorry, to me Sloane and Blair both sound like vacuous big haired heroines from an eighties US mini series.

YoHoHoandabottleofTequila · 02/12/2016 21:12

Sloane is a name? Awful.

Badhairday1001 · 02/12/2016 21:21

I love the name Mila.

KlingybunFistelvase · 02/12/2016 21:33

Mila is lovely.

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 02/12/2016 23:59

I love Sloane. Sloane Peterson was beautiful.

I like Theo and Sidney for boys.

MakeItStopNeville · 03/12/2016 00:21

I like both names but in a movie, Sloane or Blair would always be the impossibly perfect WASP ex girlfriend of the leading man. The one his parents prefer to the leading lady.

Pemba · 03/12/2016 01:17

I'm sorry, but Sloane is a particularly ugly name, whether as last or first name, and especially for a girl. Blair isn't much better (plus has the Tony Blair association and the film The Blair Witch - not great). The surnames for first names thing is such an unappealing American trend, why copy them?

Why would you do that to your daughter? Give her a proper female name that isn't a surname. Mila for example (which is gorgeous) or, as you are in Dublin, there are so many lovely Irish names.

KoalaDownUnder · 03/12/2016 01:28

Sloane is truly hideous. The sound, the connotations, everything. As is Blair, especially for a girl.

Some others on your list are lovely.

MrsBlennerhassett · 03/12/2016 01:29

I love Theo for a boy and Mila for a girl
Sloane reminds me of the sloane rangers and Blair reminds me of Tony Blair!
But really just go with whatever you love because there will always be someone who doesnt like the name. It just matters that you like it.

WyfOfBathe · 03/12/2016 01:41

I prefer Sloane to Blair. Blair makes me think of both Tony Blair & The Blair Witch Project (horror film).

Out of your whole list, I like Mila best (was also on my list for DD) and also love Harper & Piper.

I like Theo best for a boy

MitzyLeFrouf · 03/12/2016 01:56

I'm from Dublin and to be honest I think either would work, but I'm sure you'll get lots of 'oooh that's so unusual'. Ireland is weirdly conservative with names.

They're certainly both very preppy American, but so what, if that's your taste that's your taste. God knows the country has enough Aoifes and Ciaras 😉
