Giving a baby the same name as a pet?

Gut says absolutely not!

We are really struggling for a boy's name we like. If one of your family pets (who came with the name) had a name you really liked, would you use it?

It's too weird, isn't it?

I too had this dilemma, opted not to use the name annoyingly! I really love the name but it would be weird since my Mum also has a pet with that name too.

DH wanted to call DD1 after the dog his family had when he was young because he liked the name. I said absolutely not - although it was an actual girl's name, and not Rover or something like that.

I know several friends who have done this. But when the beloved pet is long deceased, not alive at the same time.

Pure coincidence (I think): my niece has the same name as a rabbit we had at children; my nephew has the same name as a cat we had years ago.

I called my two cats my favourite girls names thinking I wouldn't have children and I did consider renaming one of them but decided to give my dd another name!

My dd had the same name as my nana dog. She was pts (the dog not the daughter) earlier on this year.

Nan also has a dog the same name as my brother.

I think if it's a very mainstream name like Jack you are OK. If it's Tarquin or something more unusual it's odd

My grandma also had a dog with the same name as my brother. (the dog had long preceeded him) and I've met loads of dogs with my DCs names

I'd use it, wdnt bother me at all, it's not like his school friends/ employers / future partners etc would ever know ! :-D
I can't find any names I like for our over due baby... If there was a name of a pet I'd had tht I loved I'd be using it regardless !

I've kind of done this. As a child I briefly had a kitten that I found as a stray in our garden. I named it and then found a new home for her a few weeks later as it wasn't practical to keep her.

My dds middle name is the same as that kitten. When I announced my dds name my mum said ' like the Cat?!' tbh I'd completely forgotten about that kitten as I only had her for two weeks. I like to think it'll be a fun anecdote for my dd to listen to when older

DHs sister had the same name as their family dog, so to tell them apart for some reason they nicknamed the sister Welly. The dog is long gone, but the sister, now a woman in her fifties, is still known as Welly within the family.

Our dog came with the same name as my brother (albeit in a diminutive form but very similar). We briefly considered renaming him but decided that might be confusing for him.

And then again, it's not unknown for us to refer to DD by DDog's name and vice-versa .

My DD has the same name as my SIL's cat. It was not on purpose but when SIL pointed it out, we didn't think it was a big deal. DD is now 7 and loves sharing the name with the cat

Think it'd be unusual if it was Fido or Something very dog related. Anything else though, I'd go with, if you like the name

Our first dog as a child was called a particular boy name. We found out it was actually a she and changed it's name. DS2 has the boy dog name. I hesitated but only because my mother would make negative comments about it, but as we're NC I don't have to hear them!

It's weird if they will live in the same house, yes. One name per family member is required, animal or human.

Max/Toby/Rosie/Poppy- fine.
Rex/Felix/Mittens/Fluffy- no.

I've met more dogs called ds2's name than children called it.

We're going to name our baby after DH's cat if the baby's a boy

I worked with someone who was called Kim. Her parents had a beautiful rescued Pyrenean Mountain Dog who came to them called Kim.

I agree with your gut instinct op. It's disrespectful. No-one would suggest naming the new cat or guinea pig the same as themselves or their children if the pet came later. I'd hate to be named after the dog, however loved he was, and I can only imagine the cruel sibling teasing potential if only one child is named after a pet.
