Tommy (not Thomas)

Opinions? Smile

It's in the top 100 (I believe) so I don't agree with the comments of it not suiting adults, etc. as there will be quite a lot of Tommys who will become adults!

So, general thoughts?

I am going to name my next child Zombie Thread, nn Zomb.

Caramelcap · 19/03/2022 16:42

I think it's fine!

We are considering Sami (not Samuel) - it's a Muslim name in its own right. Had similar comments as you've received about it being a nn but it doesn't matter if you like it 😊

Lilaclavenders · 19/03/2022 17:13

If Sami is a Muslim name in its own right, then it's obviously not a nickname for Samuel.

Sami is nice.

The reason many parents choose the full/long version of a name (eg Andrew or Thomas) is so that their child can choose a nickname for themselves (Andy, Tommy, Tom etc) or they might prefer to stick with Andrew and Thomas!

I have a Tommy aged 8, Tommy on his birth certificate. We have a much older person in the family called Tommy too and it has not hindered him in any way. The family is irish, so the name is quite normal to us. I don’t like Thomas or Tom and my son corrects anybody that calls him Tom Grin I love the name & my son suits it. Peoples snobbery on here is outrageous! Do you honestly think that my son is doomed in life because of his name?! 🤦‍♀️

SoyaChai · 19/03/2022 17:56

Well Tommy can choose to go by Tom. Ap

Evasmissingletter · 19/03/2022 17:57

Love it for child and adult.

SoyaChai · 19/03/2022 17:58

Rosie could choose to go by Rose. Sammy could choose to by Sam.

I think lots of people just don't see them as infantalising tbh.

RedRobin100 · 19/03/2022 17:58

I much prefer Tom

SoyaChai · 19/03/2022 17:59

Whether someone chooses Sami as a Muslim name in its own right, or Sami as a nickname for Samuel doesn't really make any difference. It still says Sami on the BC.

Nosetickle · 19/03/2022 18:06

There will be a lot of grown men changing their names in 20 years time I reckon, all these cutesy names will just not age well. Thomas or Tom. You can still call him Tommy of course until he starts to cringe and asks you to stop as you’re embarrassing him in front of his mates.

DogsAndGin · 20/03/2022 19:47

If I saw this name on the register, I wouldn’t be surprised if the parents were travellers

breezyjam · 14/07/2024 06:20

I know this thread is old but after reading the comments I’m baffled! I have a 10 month old Tommy (Tommy on his bc) and I think it suits young, old, teen, etc. I didn’t want Thomas because I don’t like Thomas, never planned on using/saying Thomas, so why put it on his BC? If he wants to go by Tom then that is an option for him, or T.J. (His middle name is James). I call him Tommy though and I love it. Also, think of all the old Tommy’s in the world right now. Just Google “famous people named Tommy” and it’s all old men lol! I also follow a doctor on social media that goes by Dr. Tommy. Another thing that solidified by decision was i worked with a very smart and successful conservationist/forester named Bobby on his BC not Robert. Nobody would ever not hire him because his real name is Bobby. Lol!? That’s just crazy! No regrets putting Tommy on the BC!

Onthemaintrunkline · 14/07/2024 06:44

Like Tom or Thomas - great names. Tommy, no way.

DixieNormas · 14/07/2024 17:28

Can't believe someone actually made that comment about travellers, what a dick

KayEmAy · 16/07/2024 14:54

I prefer Tommy to Thomas

I see many saying it's childish but to me if a Thomas can go by Tommy as a child a Tommy can go by Tom as an adult if it bothers him. :)

MillsAndBalloons · 18/07/2024 00:42

My dad is called Tommy
... Great name!

There's loads of Alfies, Freddies, Teddys etc these days. They're not Alfred, Frederick and Theodore... 🙄

Tommy will be fine ☺
