Tommy (not Thomas)

Opinions? Smile

It's in the top 100 (I believe) so I don't agree with the comments of it not suiting adults, etc. as there will be quite a lot of Tommys who will become adults!

So, general thoughts?

My grandpa was always known as Tommy although he was Thomas on his birth certificate.

GirlsTalk250 · 18/03/2022 18:25

Cute for baby/toddler. Potentially embarrassing for a teen and too informal for adult.

Thomas is lovely and keeps all options open.

SoyaChai · 18/03/2022 19:44

Same with other diminutive names.

But then you could say, why don't you give Fred the option of being Frederick by using that on the BC. Why name someone Alex and not Alexander or Alexandra. Why Joe and not Joseph.

Diminutive names can absolutely be names in their own right.

My name is a diminutive "technically" but i don't see it that way, it's just my name.

If it bothers someone so bad they can change it.

SoyaChai · 18/03/2022 19:48

Why Lucy and not Lucille or Lucinda... give them more options?

I don't understand the proper name argument. Lucy sounds like a nickname but it's used as a proper name, so why not Archie instead of Archibald.

This thread is 6 years old Hmm

QuantumHypothesis · 18/03/2022 19:55

Baby Tommy will be 5 or 6 years old this year. Zombie thread.

SoyaChai · 18/03/2022 19:58

This thread is 6 years old hmm

So it is. Just came up on active.

RuthW · 18/03/2022 20:54

Awful.

Thomas nn Tommy, is nice.

Lolamoon123 · 18/03/2022 23:23

Please explain how it’s ‘awful’ @RuthW

Why has it got to be a ‘formal’ name on the birth certificate.

I’ve seen comments like this about the name Rosie and other cute names. My manager is a Rosie, she’s a ward manager on delivery suite and is a highly exceptional midwife. Does having a cute name make her any less of a professional? No! Has it ever affected her job? No!

speckledeggshell · 19/03/2022 10:13

Very on trend with the cutesy boy names atm (Freddie, Alfie, Albie, Theo, Milo etc). I like Tom best. I would personally use Thomas on the BC but if you intend to use the diminutive form then you'll do so and it should be totally fine. I imagine Tommy will increase in popularity due to Peaky Blinders. There is a mum at the school who has given her child the name Gigi after Gigi (Jelena) Hadid...

Lilaclavenders · 19/03/2022 10:14

I find Tommy awful too. Cutesy, infantile and not elegant.

Piggy666 · 19/03/2022 10:18

I know 2 Tommys, one is 18 months and one is 40, not abbreviated, they were named Tommy
I love the name

RaraRachael · 19/03/2022 10:19

Call me old fashioned but I really don't like children being called names like Tommy, Danny, Alfie etc. They're shortened versions or NN as MN is so fond of

Zillamop · 19/03/2022 10:20

A British soldier or a tomato

inheritancetrack · 19/03/2022 10:21

"This is the new CEO of our company...Tommy Smith" (just no)

He wil grow up eventually.

organicoatmilk · 19/03/2022 11:11

I love Tommy and dislike Tom / Thomas!

Lilaclavenders · 19/03/2022 11:13

Alfie, Teddie, Tommy, Benny, Timmy are so cutesy and fine as a family nickname for a toddler.

Fivebeanchilli · 19/03/2022 11:39

If you like Tommy but not Thomas (fair enough. I'm not a Thomas fan either) I'd use Tom on the birth certificate.
I know a Tommy (his family all call him this although I suspect Thomas is on his BC) who started secondary school as Tommy but quickly became Tom.
At 19 he is now mortified if he's called Tommy in public.
It does feel a bit infantilising to me...

SnowCatya · 19/03/2022 11:53

"This is the new CEO of our company...Tommy Smith" (just no)

I wouldn't even think twice if I heard this. He could shorten it to Tom.

organicoatmilk · 19/03/2022 12:16

@inheritancetrack

"This is the new CEO of our company...Tommy Smith" (just no)

He wil grow up eventually.

Sounds fine to me.
viques · 19/03/2022 12:21

I wonder what the OP went with. Tom/ Tommy not Thomas will be about 6 by now.

DropYourSword · 19/03/2022 12:43

I don't understand Mumsnet's utter obsession with requiring a "full" name on a birth certificate!

Lolamoon123 · 19/03/2022 12:50

Amennnnn to this @DropYourSword
Finally someone with sense ha x

FayCarew · 19/03/2022 14:27

It's #22 in Rngland & Wales!

OK but only if Thomas on BC

PiratePetespajamas · 19/03/2022 14:33

@AnnabelleZippy

I'm asking like everyone else does Confused I'm asking about Tommy (not Thomas) like people ask about other names. I didn't say you couldn't like it! We aren't set on it either, that's why I'm asking. I was just saying I'm not using Thomas.
It’s not only about you, though is it? You can choose to never call him Thomas. But what if he at some point prefers not to have a nickname as his only name? What if he would like to have something with a bit more gravitas. My mum gave me a name which I always abbreviate; she only ever calls me my full name. We’re both happy. My older child only goes by their nickname. But If in time they prefer something a bit more “adult”, then that option will be available to them.
