Posted this in the wrong thread last night! So I need advice! Called my son Dylan James ( both family names - my maiden name is Dillon)! But people are spelling Dylan wrong and giving him silly nicknames! Starting to think we should call him by his middle name James! Thoughts on Dylan and James please??

I like Dylan and would never shorten it to Dill or Dilly! It's only 2 syllables long, not exactly much work saying the full name.

No it's really not to much to say! I'm obsessing over his name now! Wish I'd called him something else :(

I wouldn't obsess over it. My parents and family, including siblings, in-laws, aunts/uncles, cousins, etc., all call me by my full name (three syllables) even though I use the one-syllable shortened version with my friends, with workmates, and in my daily adult life in general. (I made the switch as a teenager because my shortened name is very common - think Catherine and Kate, for example). I never personally use the long version. HOWEVER, the long name stuck with my whole extended family, because it's what my parents always used.

But to my parents and family, I am still and always will be "Catherine". They don't like "Kate" at all, and it would be REALLY weird to hear them call me that. They're fine with me using it in the rest of my life though - it doesn't affect them! How often do they speak to my friends and colleagues? Never!

The thing is though, you have no idea how your DS might feel about Dyl. Maybe he'll love it! It's not exactly an offensive word, it just sounds like the herb dill. It's not like it's being shortened to shit or piss or something (scuse swears).

If you really want to change his name, I would say just do it ASAP before people get too used to Dylan.

James is a great name, though I honestly don't see the problem with Dylan or Dyl personally.

I have a Dylan..I never shorten it to Dyl..I hate it..My friends know I do so don't shorten it his mates...I cannot control..

Also I do get various spellings of his name...A friend on FB messaged me the other day spelling it Dillon, I replied spelling Dylan but still sent him same spelling it Dillon still..

I do find it more commonly spelt Dylan than any other way..

The problem is now I'm obsessing and looking it up on google and someone has mentioned the nn dildo!! Serious case of name regret today!!! I just want to love his name! I really should have stayed away from Google!!
