Posted this in the wrong thread last night! So I need advice! Called my son Dylan James ( both family names - my maiden name is Dillon)! But people are spelling Dylan wrong and giving him silly nicknames! Starting to think we should call him by his middle name James! Thoughts on Dylan and James please??

I have a Dylan..I never shorten it to Dyl..I hate it..My friends know I do so don't shorten it his mates...I cannot control..

Also I do get various spellings of his name...A friend on FB messaged me the other day spelling it Dillon, I replied spelling Dylan but still sent him same spelling it Dillon still..

I do find it more commonly spelt Dylan than any other way..

The thing is though, you have no idea how your DS might feel about Dyl. Maybe he'll love it! It's not exactly an offensive word, it just sounds like the herb dill. It's not like it's being shortened to shit or piss or something (scuse swears).

If you really want to change his name, I would say just do it ASAP before people get too used to Dylan.

James is a great name, though I honestly don't see the problem with Dylan or Dyl personally.

I wouldn't obsess over it. My parents and family, including siblings, in-laws, aunts/uncles, cousins, etc., all call me by my full name (three syllables) even though I use the one-syllable shortened version with my friends, with workmates, and in my daily adult life in general. (I made the switch as a teenager because my shortened name is very common - think Catherine and Kate, for example). I never personally use the long version. HOWEVER, the long name stuck with my whole extended family, because it's what my parents always used.

But to my parents and family, I am still and always will be "Catherine". They don't like "Kate" at all, and it would be REALLY weird to hear them call me that. They're fine with me using it in the rest of my life though - it doesn't affect them! How often do they speak to my friends and colleagues? Never!

No it's really not to much to say! I'm obsessing over his name now! Wish I'd called him something else :(

I like Dylan and would never shorten it to Dill or Dilly! It's only 2 syllables long, not exactly much work saying the full name.

Ah yikes! Why did I not think of this! Does he mind getting Dyl?

My youngest brother is called Dylan Jay (Jay after my dad), and he always gets Dyl. Not really by family but all of his high school friends call him it. He also gets DJ a lot.

Dylan James is lovely.
People do tend to shorten names, however, I see nothing wrong with Dyl, or indeed 'D', but Dilly, not so much 😄

As for the spelling people are continuously spelling Dillon, perphaps to do with my maiden name! Hopefully over time that passes too

Yes I'm maybe making a fuss over nothing! Close family friends call him Dylan! It was my hubbys work colleague called him Dyl! But I just have visions of him going to school and getting dilly etc etc!!!!! But suppose there are nicknames for every name! I need to learn to love Dylan again!

I like the name Dylan much more than the name James. I agree about mentioning (light-heartedly) to your friends/family that you prefer the full name. I'm sure they'll understand - I know I would. That way everyone around you calls him Dylan, and if eventually his friends at school give him a shorter name, who cares? You'll rarely talk to them about him anyway.

As for spelling, it's a very easy name to spell.

Yes I will definitely be doing that! Don't understand why people can't just use the full proper name! Hate this baby name regret! I always said i would call my first son Dylan after my maiden name but now I'm so put off :(

I would correct people when they shorten it (not in a hysterical stick up the arse type way) My sons have short names and people used to call them even shorter versions - so I just said 'if I wanted him to be called insert shorter name here I would have called him that (in a lighthearted way- but everyone got the hint) xx

You can correct people while he's still so little though, if it really bothers you.

Report

If it makes you feel any better, it probably wouldn't have helped if you had picked a name which couldn't be shortened. He might have ended up being called something longer or totally unrelated.

I know a Charlotte who used to get called Carlotta, a Ross who got called Rossle and an Emma who got called Emmelina!
