We're really struggling to find a girls name that's right for us. DP found a name he really likes & I thought it was nice too but literally no one we've casually mentioned it to likes it. We don't feel we can ask people who know us to tell us what they think in case we did end up picking it & it'd be awkward. But really I'm not too keen to pick something that seems so unpopular. So can I ask what you think of this name? What does it evoke?
It's Adaline (pronounced Add-a-line)

It reminds me of Aveline from Bread. I imagine it shouted by the fishwife Mother in a scouse accent.

If you're under 30 you probably wont have a clue what I'm going on about Grin

When I read how you pronounce it it made me think of pregnancy tests as the extra line came up for pregnant. Adeline is nicer in my opinion. Is it an actual name or did you make it up? Do you mind that she'll have to tell people how to pronounce it etc. If you and your partner love it then just use it and sod anyone else.

Devon2000 · 08/09/2016 22:28

Sorry that was a typo it is Adeline!

MackerelOfFact · 08/09/2016 22:33

Spelt Adeline it is quite pretty, but I can't get past it basically being "add a line".

If you don't work in publishing like I do though, it may be a little less evocative!

Puddingandcustard · 08/09/2016 22:34

I feel the same as the previous posters: really love the name, but the spelling Adeline just flows a bit better somehow?

plimsolls · 08/09/2016 22:36

I like it a lot (especially taking into account your first spelling of it was a typo).

I think it's classy, unusual but not bizarre, will suit a baby, a teen, and an adult.

Great choice!

Puddingandcustard · 08/09/2016 22:37

Cross post!

Adeline is beautiful. But family will often criticise choices if you tell them in advance. They won't when she's born.

I made the mistake of saying a name before DC was born and they put me off my first choice! I still wish I hadn't told anyone until DC was born and just announced the name.

Go with what you love! Smile

Hayls17 · 08/09/2016 22:41

I like it, it is on my list of possible names too

Sophronia · 08/09/2016 22:42

Love it spelled Adeline

Goldenvalley · 08/09/2016 22:43

Adelaide is also lovely.

Giraffeseyelashes · 08/09/2016 22:53

It's a beautiful name, I love it.

katemess12 · 08/09/2016 22:55

As far as I'm aware, the correct spelling is Adeline.

For what it's worth, I think it's beautiful. I do think it's going to increase in popularity though, if that's important to you.

Raines100 · 09/09/2016 06:18

Beautiful name

LynetteScavo · 09/09/2016 06:30

Well, I'm not keen... Don't tell anyone in advance, go for a name you like then announce it. Everyone will say it's lovely Grin

RaeSkywalker · 09/09/2016 06:32

I love it.

KoalaDownUnder · 09/09/2016 06:35

I totally love it. And Adelaide.

Partiallycloudy · 09/09/2016 06:45

Best thing to do is not to discuss names before baby is born. People will always have an opinion, especially if you announce the name before the babies arrival.
If you wait till baby arrives and say "this is Adeline" people are less likely to comment - atleast to your face!

Devon2000 · 09/09/2016 08:29

Thanks everyone. A lot more positive than we expected. We weren't going to discuss name choices with people we know in case of people putting us off but i think it got mentioned to 1 or 2 people who, although they didn't say anything, their faces did, and it just kind of snowballed. We've been sampling with random strangers at bus stops etc who ask what names we're considering and its just been consistent lack of positive response so we started to think we were missing something glaringly obvious. We both have unusual names, mine is really rare, and I love having a unique name & I get complimented a lot on it, so that's important to us, but it's getting that balance of unique and lovely not 'unique because no one is crazy enough to pick it' !!

potatofish love that! I hadn't realised, that gives it a lovely history.

Mackereloffact a colleague did ask me to 'add a line' to a document the other day and it did jar, so completely get your point.

Adeline, love this name, go for it OP. Say no more.

Honeybee79 · 09/09/2016 20:08

Adeline is lovely.

JamieVardysParty · 09/09/2016 20:15

LOVE Adeline and also Adelaide.

RedLarvaYellowLarva · 09/09/2016 20:44

LOVE it, mainly due to the utterly charming film en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Age_of_Adaline. I do prefer the 'e' spelling, mainly because Del/Della are cute nicknames, 'Dal' doesn't work the same, imo.

thesnailandthewhale · 09/09/2016 21:31

Reminds me of Heidi and plaits - the childrens tv programme version in the 80's, her best friend was called Adaline I think.

yeOldeTrout · 09/09/2016 21:51

My .... Great-great grandmother was Sarah Adaline. That was definitely the spelling. I guess they didn't know how to spell in 1830, harhar.

dontwannapullahammie · 10/09/2016 07:11

I don't even know if it is how you're meant to say it, but in my head I pronounce it Ad-ah-leen...that takes it away from the add a line thing
