Margaret - Meg - Peg - Peggy

Molly is also a traditional shortening for Margaret. The reasons for that are probably lost in the mists of time though.

I like Peggity. Spelt like that.

But I LOVE Arrietty!

EvilTwins · 16/08/2016 22:57

If you do go with it, OP, you really need to spell it as it is in Dickens. Any other option is just weird and will make you look uneducated

My ancient and very fat guinea pig is called Peggy [smile}

JasperDamerel · 16/08/2016 23:14

Arietty is much nicer than Peggotty, which is too close to "maggotty".

In Medieval times it was traditional for M names to have P diminutives. Polly is also from Margaret. So Margaret - Molly - Polly. There were probably others that haven't lasted. This was largely because names would be passed down through families so you'd have lots of people with the same name, nicknamed helped to distinguish whilst everyone would still know what the family name was. John for example, very popular name, the son of John would also be called John but would be known as Jack. Jack has over time become a name in its own right but it is traditionally a nickname.

I love names.

Arietty is lovely!!

NapQueen · 17/08/2016 09:02

We liked Pearl but avoided it as it's also a derivative of Margaret and dc1 is Meg.

Peggy and Maggie is a definite no no.

SpidersFromMars · 17/08/2016 09:08

Arietty as a nn for Harriet is quite lovely I think.

Marcipex · 17/08/2016 09:13

Arrietty is quite nice, though I prefer Harriet. I know a Harriet nn Ratty!

Peggy is okay but Maggie and Peggoty makes Maggoty.

PizzzaTheHutt · 17/08/2016 09:24

Arietty is lovely. I would spell it with one r though as will get confusing otherwise. Etty is a lovely nn too.
