Pegetty

First name for a girl. Will be shortened to Peg or Peggy.

At least Peggy is a proper name. Why would you lumber her with Peggotty if she'd be known day to day as Peggy? This 'options' malarkey can be taken too far!

villainousbroodmare · 16/08/2016 21:43

Peggy and Maggie are derivatives of the same name so would be a bit odd imo.
Also Peggotty or whatever is not that nice, I think.

squoosh · 16/08/2016 21:44

Yes, having a Maggie and Peggy would be a bit odd.

RiverTam · 16/08/2016 21:47

Oh yes, Arriety.

You can't have Maggie and Peggy!

MoonfaceAndSilky · 16/08/2016 21:47

Peggarty is the best way I think. If you spell it Peggotty you will get people saying 'peg-otty'

Those of you saying it is a made-up name - ALL names are made up Confused

Thewrongcheesegrommit · 16/08/2016 21:52

Well, thanks for all the help, but dh is now set on Arrietty! I got to choose ds and dd, so he reckons it's his turn! I like it, so no problems there.

Moonface, dh said the same thing - all names are made up at some point!!

Maggie and Peggy both come from Margaret. It'b like having a Lizzie and Betty.

squoosh · 16/08/2016 21:55

Arietty! Oh dear.

Get him away from the bookcase.

DramaAlpaca · 16/08/2016 21:55

I think Arrietty is really cute, actually.

RiverTam · 16/08/2016 21:56

Let's hope she doesn't turn out to be 6foot tall, being named after a Borrower might be especially crap then (tbh it's a pretty crap idea anyway, sorry).

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/08/2016 21:57

Arrietty is infinitely better than Peggy short for anything given you already have a Maggie.

squoosh · 16/08/2016 21:58

I'd rather be called Peggy than Arietty. Even if my sister was also called Peggy.

DownWithThisSortaThing · 16/08/2016 21:59

Sorry but Peggaty is awful and your child wouldn't thank you for it!
Arrietty is nicer Smile

MoonfaceAndSilky · 16/08/2016 22:02

Arrietty is cute Smile

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/08/2016 22:02

Etty is nice as a nn, not sure about the Arri bit.

HmmmHashtag · 16/08/2016 22:05

How about Arietta then you can nn Arietty?

EvilTwins · 16/08/2016 22:05

Peggotty. But it's a surname, from David Copperfield. The character is only called by her surname because she's a servant.

augustusdecimus · 16/08/2016 22:11

Apples and oranges.

If you spell it Peggarty you will get people saying "Peg-arty"

PaperdollCartoon · 16/08/2016 22:13

Arietty is brilliant, use that! My mum wanted it for me but was overruled. I'm Harriet instead, which is pretty similar. I would have bossed being called Arietty though!

Pegotty however you spell it just doesn't seem very pretty, or strong, just a bit made up. Peggy is lovely, but I really don't think you can have Peggy and Maggie, it's the same name. Daisy is also short for Margaret by the way. It's be like having Billy and Will or James and Seamus or even Charles and Charlotte.

chattygranny · 16/08/2016 22:16

Arietty was such a sweet character in the Borrowers!

TiggerAlbyandMe · 16/08/2016 22:22

I actually really like both names! Obviously we're in the minority OP Grin

LowAMH · 16/08/2016 22:43

Peggotty is truly terrible

Peggy if you must, but you can't have a Peggy and a Maggie. They are the same name ie both Margaret!

CoolioAndTheGang · 16/08/2016 22:46

You need to remember that your child is going to have this name for a long time at least until they are old enough to get it legally changed so try to be kind

nancy75 · 16/08/2016 22:47

I know it's right but I just don't get how or why Peggy is short for Margaret, it makes no sense.
