Ten weeks before my baby boy arrives, I seem to have a thing for names ending in O. What do you think when you hear the name Hugo? Is it just too try hard / pretentious?! The surname is Bentley
Any comments , suggestions welcomed 😊

In the abstract, I think posh. I'd expect public school and quite possibly Oxbridge. If I knew a real one, I'd just associate it with him. I had the same thoughts about Ruperts until I met one.

Jaimx86 · 11/08/2016 10:48

I like it!

Missgraeme · 11/08/2016 10:49

Vicar of Dibley

Cliffdiver · 11/08/2016 10:49

Hugo in The Vicar of Dibly Grin

But I love the name.

TheLegendOfBeans · 11/08/2016 10:49

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/08/2016 10:50

A French bulldog. I really and truly don't know why. But I do.

Nevertheless I like it.

wobblywonderwoman · 11/08/2016 10:55

I love Hugh. It is one of my absolute favourite names.

With your surname Hugo sounds posh but its lovely.

wobblywonderwoman · 11/08/2016 10:55

Leo ?

fakenamefornow · 11/08/2016 10:58

I like it. It does sound very posh with your last name, but so what, what's wrong with posh.

peppercold · 11/08/2016 11:00

Hugo a go go! Grin love it and goes fab with your surname.

LadyCassandra · 11/08/2016 11:01

We have a Hugo. We are definitely not posh, but are overseas so it sounds very English compared to all the other kids round here Grin

CwtchyQ · 11/08/2016 11:01

A cat.

PancakesAndMapleSyrup · 11/08/2016 11:11

Fab name i love it!. Tbh your surname sounds quite 'posh' (if i have to quantify) so any first name will be associated anyway. but who cares, if you lpve the name go for it.

FV45 · 11/08/2016 11:19

I think of this!

augustusdecimus · 11/08/2016 11:21

I like the name.

MiddleClassProblem · 11/08/2016 11:25

Polo player who holidays in Cannes. I bet he has nice sunglasses.

Destinysdaughter · 11/08/2016 11:28

Posh. Is that what you're going for?

sh700 · 11/08/2016 11:34

Love it. Was my favourite boys name. DH vetoed it as he thought it was pretentious though.

SucculentSoul · 11/08/2016 11:38

I love it so much I called my dog Hugo because we aren't planning on anymore kids.

Archfarchnad · 11/08/2016 11:38

In Germany it's the name of a drink made from prosecco, elderflower cordial and mint. Pronounced Hoo-gaw. It's a man's name too, like Hugo Boss the clothes firm.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 11/08/2016 11:40

Posh, pretentious twat. Sorry. I like Hughie though.

augustusdecimus · 11/08/2016 11:42

For what it's worth, I don't think the perceived poshness matters, OP. Do you like it? That's the main thing.

If you're posh and you use a posh name - no issue.
If you're not posh and you use a posh name, then people will soon realise he's not posh when they get to know him! And then maybe the new generation won't grow up thinking of Hugo as a posh name!

idontlikealdi · 11/08/2016 11:46

If my twins had been boys (which they were supposed to be!) one would have been Hugo. We are not posh and I love the name.

YesYABU · 11/08/2016 11:53

I loved this name, but got vetoed!

squoosh · 11/08/2016 12:03

Until recently it reminded me of the type of guy you'd see at the Henley Regatta wearing a straw boater and a striped blazer. Posh.

These days it's one of those names that has filtered through to the masses and has shaken off (some) of it's toffishness.
