Ten weeks before my baby boy arrives, I seem to have a thing for names ending in O. What do you think when you hear the name Hugo? Is it just too try hard / pretentious?! The surname is Bentley
Any comments , suggestions welcomed 😊

I think of dogs. Sorry!

catinbooots · 12/08/2016 07:41

Lol at gingerbreadgingerbread who I bet fancies herself as 'proper' posh

Scorbus · 12/08/2016 07:43

For me it's a dog name, my canine nephew is Hugo

Toocold · 12/08/2016 07:45

Of a cute dark haired little boy with the same name. If you love a name go for it, be boring if we all liked the same.

Hugosdaughter · 12/08/2016 07:53

Of my lovely Dad. His birth cert name is Hugh and Hugo is a NN. I love it and it's my sons middle name.

Btw he is a not at all posh farmer (think mountainous sheep farming as opposed to country estate Smile)

DaisyFranceLynch · 12/08/2016 07:57

The first thing that came into my head was "red trousers", for some reason.

To me it sounds a bit posh but I really like it, and I don't think it's pretentious. It's short, simple and classic. It was on my boys' shortlist but my husband vetoed it (along with Rupert). Leo is lovely too.

Not so keen on Elton, which makes me think of Elton John or the awful vicar from Emma.

Frazzled2207 · 12/08/2016 08:00

I have a Leo. Round here (north west) there are loads of Leos but not come across a Hugo yet. I think it would be seen as posh up here but probably less so in the South East.

ElodieS · 12/08/2016 08:33

I really like it, I also know a lovely Hugo - he is a bit posh (and Oxbridge), but a very nice man so who cares?

alltouchedout · 12/08/2016 08:35

Bit posh. Penny Vincenzi character type name. Sweet though.

Thundercake · 12/08/2016 08:40

Hugo Boss

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/08/2016 08:58

It does have upmarket connotations, but I don't think that should put anyone off if they like it.
I like it, and a friend of dd has a lovely little Hugo.

Mollbie · 12/08/2016 11:54

Posh, I can't say it in my head without using a very posh accent.

GingerbreadGingerbread · 12/08/2016 12:10

catinboots not at all! I just know a few people (well two couples) who are a bit TOWIE wannabe and they like names like Hugo because they do want to appear "posh". I think because it has such connotations it can only be used by genuine "posh" people otherwise it's pretentious and I know it's being taken over by "chavvy" types.

Fozzleyplum · 12/08/2016 13:08

When I was growing up, names like Hugo, Otto, Milo and Monty were generally the preserve of upper middle/ gentrified families and, certainly in the provinces, might have had "chinless/upper class twit" connotations too.

Nowadays, those types of names seem to be favoured by middle class aspirational types. IMO that really doesn't matter, if it doesn"t bother you and if you like the name. I wouldn"t describe Hugo as "chavvy" ( don't like that word anyway), but some people will think it's a bit "try hard".

MamaLazarou · 12/08/2016 20:01

I work in a boys' prep school and Hugo is by far the most common (as in popular) name. All the little Hugos are absolutely lovely, but there are rather a lot of them!

lazylittlelucy · 13/08/2016 09:41

We have a Hugo and I still love the name after 6/7 years. We are not posh, but it's no more unusual than many names in DS's class. Most people who hear it tell us it's a fab name (not that it matters) and while it is more popular now that when we chose it, as far as I know he is the only Hugo in his school.

WilliamScottsOrange · 13/08/2016 19:57

Adore Hugo and Hugh /Huw is a great nickname

WilliamScottsOrange · 13/08/2016 19:58

Jago (jay-go) is also great. Cornish for James I think

Milo ?

Bluesand1 · 13/08/2016 20:08

Not posh. Becoming popular near me

Alisvolatpropiis · 13/08/2016 20:21

As WSO has put forward Jago (which is indeed the Cornish for James), can I be so bold as to put forward Iago, the Welsh for James?

I know the name has had a bad rep since Shakespeare's Othello (and latterly Aladin Hmm) but it's a good name!

isitseptemberyet · 13/08/2016 20:50

i like Iago , im welsh :-D
Unfortunately my OH isnt and said no lol
really appreciate suggestions :)

MrBoot · 14/08/2016 00:07

I dislike it, I don't think it is posh as much as aspirational.

I really like Hugh which in my opinion is a strong, classic name.
