Is it acceptable to have 2 Middle names

I was just wondering what people thought about having 2 Middle names for a child I don't want it to sound too pretentious or anything. The reason we were thinking was if its a girl we would have Valerie as a middle name after my husbands late mum, I always wanted to include the name joy after my grandma. So we would potentially have Sophia Valerie Joy and then our surname (which is short)

Hope so as I have 2!

dylsmimi · 31/07/2016 18:35

I think that sounds lovely - works as joy is a short name and you say your surname is short. I think when you have 3 very long names and a long surname it becomes a bit of a mouthful but you don't use middle names very often
I am trying to gently persuade dh to give ds3 2 Middle names - he wants to name him after his df who passed away but it's a very old fashioned (but not back in fashion) name and I think a 'nicer' Middle name would be good! Although we need to decide on a first name first!!
Op your daughters name works well

Unfairestofthemall · 31/07/2016 18:35

Both my kids have 2. My DS after his grandads and my DD after her grandmothers. No one has batted an eyelid. If you like it go for it Grin
Congratulations by the way Flowers

SprogletsMum · 31/07/2016 18:37

My dc2 has 2 middle names after my nan and dp's nan.

jamhot · 31/07/2016 18:38

I have 2 middle names. It can be a bit of a pain as some official forms only allow for 1 middle name.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 31/07/2016 18:39

DS has 2 middle names. I always used to say his name was longer than him! He's grown a bit now though so it fits him better. Grin

JasperDamerel · 31/07/2016 18:39

I have two middle names, and think it's perfectly normal.

AuldYow · 31/07/2016 18:41

Both my DSs have 2 middle names, they both love them as they are their great grandad's names.

My mum was Hmm and not happy but to her annoyance I ignored her. My brother gave his DDs 2 middle names too Mum just harrumphed & said "you're just like your daft sister"! Love my mum!

MummaGiles · 31/07/2016 18:42

I hope so my DS has 2!

NameChange30 · 31/07/2016 18:43

As long as the baby has just one first name and one surname, I think two middle names are fine. Four names in total is fine especially if some of them are short (if they were all 3 or 4 syllables it might sound silly!)

FWIW I think Sophia Valerie Joy is a lovely name Smile

LemonadeRingOnIt · 31/07/2016 18:44

I have two, as does DP. I'm pretentiously middle class and he's a working class Brummie Grin

I don't think it's got any element of class/prevention.

BertrandRussell · 31/07/2016 18:46

Both mine do.

BertrandRussell · 31/07/2016 18:49

And hyphenated last names. 27 letters in my ds's full name. 7 in the one he uses day to day now. But he still enjoys putting out the whole thing sometimes!

MalbecAndLindt · 31/07/2016 18:51

Yep, absolutely fine as long as flows well. OH has two middle names. I'm 10 weeks pregnant and this baby (and subsequent children ) will have two middle names. If it's a boy, middle names will be both our dads names and a girl will also have two middle names after our mums. I'm close to my family so want to honour them and OH is an only child so it's only fair to name after his of the family as well.

Sophia Valerie Joy is beautiful.

FiveFullFathoms · 31/07/2016 18:53

I have 2 middle name - it's never been a problem.

Sophia Valerie Joy is lovely.

becciandbump · 31/07/2016 20:09

Thanks everyone I really like it, I think 2 middle names is nice just don't know any close friends that have done it so didn't know if it was a done thing. I'm glad it seems not out of place to do as I quite like the name. Find out on tues what we are having. I bet it's going to be a boy now!! We have a couple options for a boy but prob only 1 Middle name for boy x

Yes. I have two and so does my brother.

NameChange30 · 31/07/2016 21:42

I should add that if you'd like to have more than one child you should probably do the same number of middle names for each one.

OsMalleytheCat · 31/07/2016 21:47

I have three middle names and a double barrelled surname (since marriage - wasn't born with it) and it's never caused me any problems and never found it to be pretentious. Although I rarely use them as often unpractical on forms etc.

Florrieboo · 01/08/2016 05:28

DD has two middle names, and they are both long (Beatrice Primrose) and her first name is long as well (the longer version of my username) and our surname is one of those long old English surnames - so she has a LOT of name and it works perfectly.

PotatoBread · 02/08/2016 15:23

My 4 week old DD has two middle names. No one generally knows or pays attention to the muddle names anyway! Think my niece and nephew also have 2

coveredinhopeandvaseline · 02/08/2016 18:51

I was named after every female saint who had a feast day the week I was born...think Sinead O'Connor when she was going through her priest phase.

Pain in the arse when it comes to filling in forms!!

HerestoyouMrsRobinson · 02/08/2016 18:57

Yes! DS4 has 3 middle names because each of his older brothers chose one each Smile

becciandbump · 02/08/2016 19:13

Just a little update she's definately a girl!!!! Just had scan so thanks for help think we are set on the name now x
