How would you pronounce the Irish name Emer?

Just wondering if it would be mis pronounced a lot from the spelling?

No, a fada would make it Aymer.

Anyway, Emer is not in written in Irish.

It's in English, using English letter sounds.

Like Kevin.

Mov1ngOn · 19/07/2016 09:44

Yup the way I'd say Emma is emmer which is how I'd say emergency. The "ma" here is the same as "mer". So yes I'd say emmagency. Hope that helps!

It would be easier if we were all sat hearing the sounds as it is hard to write what you say when it seems obvious to you!

Mov1ngOn · 19/07/2016 09:45

I'd pronounce Emer, Emma and emer(gency) all the same.

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 19/07/2016 10:01

2nd, the 'ma' of Emma and the 'er' of Emer would be pronounced the same in many English accents.

Why do people find it so hard to understand that not everyone has the same accent as them?!

Knowing it was an Irish name my guess would have been Ee-Muh (with my English pronunciation- not pronouncing the /r/ sound and with a Schwa on the end). But if I hadn't known it was Irish I would have thought it might be an invented spelling for Emma. With the 'Em' from Emma and the 'er' or Schwa sound from teacher or brother.

Emma as a pronunciation for Emer actually makes a lot of sense but it's not the only pronunciation that makes a lot of sense. There are plenty of names that have different pronunciations depending on accent: Michelle, Elaine. And plenty that have multiple spellings: Aaron, Aren, Arun.

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 19/07/2016 10:01

And most names will be pronounced differently depending on the speakers accent.

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 19/07/2016 10:03

Also...I would say the last syllable of Emma and Emer the same way but differently to Emergency.

PamBagnallsGotACollage · 19/07/2016 10:04

The 'er' in emergency, obvs!

(Must complete thoughts before posting!)

Sophronia · 19/07/2016 11:55

Eee-murr

Floggingmolly · 19/07/2016 11:58

It's Ee-mur. And it's not "how would you pronounce" (Emma, seriously?!), that's how it is pronounced.

Mov1ngOn · 19/07/2016 12:01

You're missing the point of the thread flogging. People from different regions will pronounce an unknown word differently. So the question wasn't "how is it pronounced?" obviously E-mur but how would you, not having seen it before, pronounce it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/07/2016 12:02

Ee-mur

Floggingmolly · 19/07/2016 12:03

Ah, sorry Blush

youngestisapsycho · 19/07/2016 12:07

I'm thinking Emma sound as in Emerald... you don't say Ee-merald.

SpidersFromMars · 19/07/2016 13:51

I think I'd initially say Emer (Em-muh) because I know a few Emerson's pronounced that way (and I guess Emerson's are "Emer's sons"... like Johnson's)

Ee-mer is definitely simple to correct to, though. You'd only have to tell me once.

Is Emer a boy or a girl? Or could it be used for both/either?

CmereTilliTellYa · 19/07/2016 14:04

Emer is a girls name, never a boys Spiders

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 19/07/2016 14:09

I would wonder if it was pronounced like Eimer (ee-mer) but with the i missed out for some reason
or "em-mer" if it's not trying to be Eimer without the i?

orangebird69 · 19/07/2016 14:11

Ee-mer. Surely if is was Emma it would be spelled Emmer?

Dandelionsmakeyouwee · 19/07/2016 14:16

This reminds me of my daughters name - Mila. Everybody says MY-la except it's ME-la.

I try not to correct people at this stage as she's young and when she's older she can tell people how it's pronounced anyway but it is annoying.

SoggyBeachDays · 19/07/2016 14:41

Ed-mur. Stress on the first syllable. I'm Scottish.

SoggyBeachDays · 19/07/2016 14:41

Ha - autocorrect. Ee-mur!

Groovee · 19/07/2016 14:47

My colleague pronounces her name Eemur. She's Irish.

iCloud · 19/07/2016 15:57

I would say Emma, or Emm-err

yaaasqueen · 19/07/2016 15:58

I know a teenaged Emer pronounced EeMah

disappoint15 · 19/07/2016 16:06

Yes, Emerald and Emerson are much better examples of how I would have pronounced Emer than emergency because they are stressed on the first syllable whereas emergency is stressed on the second.

And since I have a non-rhotic accent the 'Emer' in 'emerald' is pronounced exactly the same as Emma.
