Thoughts on Olive...

We have had the name Martha picked for our baby girl, due soon, for a long time. I've recently had a wobble because I've met a few other Martha's and the name appears to be gaining in popularity. I am very taken with Olive but wondered what the consensus is, it seems to be a love it or hate it one. Thoughts on the names much appreciated.

girlsthatdance, it is truly unbelievable isn't it!!! Using a name that is vaguely related in some way to a made up character, who isn't 'pretty' and wears pretend glasses...who cares. I'm sure there is a negative thing someone could say about any name out there but that doesn't mean we can't use it.

I LOVE the name Olive. It is cute and spunky and not commonly used, my favourite colour is green and I am a massive foodie. I like that it's not frilly, I hope my daughter is a strong woman with an open mind and a fun personality.

The divide I am sensing is adding to my desire to use the name...that's got to be a good thing. Thank you.

So On The Buses is still shown on some minor freeview channel.
I'm still struggling to believe that vast numbers of people born after the 1970's - especially peers of a baby born now - will be familiar enough with the show to automatically think of Olive from On The Buses when they meet OPs daughter.

I'm not a fan of Olive as a name, but I really don't think On The Buses is a good reason to avoid using Olive for a baby.

Yes op you're quite right but you posted on here for 'thoughts on Olive' and seem taken aback that some people don't like it and associate it with a joke tv character. Now you know.

sophiepumpkin · 31/07/2016 18:10

You didn't give thoughts on 'Olive' you expressed shock that I had googled the tv character and was still considering using it.

I suppose I was just saying why it wasn't a factor for me.

I am also heavily pregnant and highly sensitive Grin

OP as I said before Olive is my middle name so I've heard many things about it over the years. I'm 35 and had never heard of or seen On The Buses and certainly never had anyone relate my name to that character. So I really wouldn't worry about that link.
Yes I did get a bit bullied for the Olive Oyl link (Popeye's gf) but I also got bullied for being ginger and for being clever so meh. People will find something to bully for if they want to. I wasn't so keen on Olive as a kid but it is much more in vogue now and I am no longer ashamed of it in any way. I also appreciate the family link (granny and great granny) more now.
Anyway, I would really ignore the On The Buses thing and go for it if you like it!

We have a three year old Olive and the name suits her down to the ground and we love it!! We've had nothing but compliments and a couple of people say they wanted to use the same name but weren't brave enough?! And we were inspired by the character from Little Miss Sunshine ;)

Judewatt · 01/08/2016 14:16

We were inspired by that film too. I love that little girl!

I like olive. Something strong and sturdy and feisty about it.
Look up olive schreiner - story of an African farm.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/08/2016 15:23

I like Olive.

Thank you wordsaremything. I enjoyed reading about Olive Schreiner...sent on to DH & remaining hopeful!

Awful name. Drab, sludgy and unimaginative are the words that come to mind when I think of it.

Love Martha and Delilah.

MrsRhubarb · 06/08/2016 15:37

I think they're both lovely! There are so many Olivia's about that Olive is really refreshing. I think it is really pretty, I'd use it myself but we have an Oliver who is quite closely related to me.

Kittykatmacbill · 07/08/2016 22:38

Love the name olive, both dds names are a bit 'granny chic' though. I know quite a lot of Martha's it's fine but a bit meh. Not keen on the name Delilah, I am sure it's fine as an adult but the only child one I am aware of (mark cavendish's wee girl) always makes me wince a bit. Stick with olive!
