Thoughts on Olive...

We have had the name Martha picked for our baby girl, due soon, for a long time. I've recently had a wobble because I've met a few other Martha's and the name appears to be gaining in popularity. I am very taken with Olive but wondered what the consensus is, it seems to be a love it or hate it one. Thoughts on the names much appreciated.

I'm not massively keen. It feels a bit... sludgy, because of the colour. I prefer Martha, but it is definitely more popular.

That said, I know a toddler Olive (18 months) and I do like the name much better on actually meeting one (if that makes sense!)

harderandharder2breathe · 24/07/2016 13:46

I really don't like it, Martha is much nicer

I know a couple but not super popular (although I really only know school age kids)

sophiepumpkin · 24/07/2016 13:59

I'd never heard of Olive on the buses...have since googled her. It's unfortunate both DH and I wear glasses, seems a high chance she might need to.

We've gone off Martha due to the numbers we've met recently.

Currently considering Delilah as an option, shortened to Lilah maybe.

But then she'll have everyone going "Why, why whyyyyyyyyyy Delilah?" Wink.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 24/07/2016 14:08

Delilah does have unfortunate connotations.

Lilah sounds quite pretty.

sophiepumpkin · 24/07/2016 15:04

It's an utter nightmare!!!!!! I'm entirely consumed by this decision, my hormones are wild. I think it's going to be a case of waiting to meet her.

Both times with my DC, we had a shortlist by the time baby arrived, but we didn't make the final decision on names until after we'd met the DC.

TroysMammy · 24/07/2016 15:50

I know a Delia but she's not a baby anymore Smile, late 40's.

MargotLovedTom · 24/07/2016 16:34

I know a Delia too; nice lady, does a lot of cooking Grin.

Sorry to be facetious. It's difficult when slightly less common names are indelibly associated with well known people or characters in popular culture or history.

ifcatscouldtalk · 24/07/2016 17:29

Choose whatever you love. You will always get conflicting opinions on any name. I'm not overly mad on Olive but you probably wouldn't fall in love with my daughter's name.I always think gathering lots of opinions makes the decision harder.

WaitrosePigeon · 24/07/2016 19:25

I love it!

MadameCholetsDirtySecret · 24/07/2016 19:29

I dont like Olive again because of OTB. I also dont like Mabel. It is a harsh sounding name.

I love Olivia.

TroysMammy · 24/07/2016 19:29

I never even thought of Delia Smith just the girl in my school. Thought it was a better name than Delilah.

Lilacpink40 · 24/07/2016 19:31

Love Olive.

I don't think many will think about OTB when they see a baby/child.

Bravada · 25/07/2016 14:06

Oil. Yuck. Awful. Sorry. I hate all the others as well to be honest. What about

Lilia
Leah

heron98 · 26/07/2016 13:58

Is she going to be round and black?

If so, go for it.

sophiepumpkin · 26/07/2016 14:34

There's no need to be rude heron98. She'll be white, and of average build if she's anything like me. Do you compare every name literally to something physical you are familiar with?

Anyway, Olive is becoming quickly my top choice and it's been great hearing so many helpful suggestions.

MelCookie · 28/07/2016 12:01

Hmm, don't like it I'm afraid. Go for it though!

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 28/07/2016 12:06

I really, really don't like it.

I don't like the way it sounds, but also as others have sad 'Olive' from On The Busses (I know that's really old now, but it only takes one child) & Popeye's Olive.

It's a food/oil.

Sorry, but you did ask!

Mycraneisfixed · 28/07/2016 12:17

I can't say 'Olive' without wanting to add 'oil' and I'm old enough to remember Olive from 'On The Buses' She was sooooo ugly!

IrregularCommentary · 31/07/2016 09:59

I think Olive is lovely OP, I'd go for it. I understand people have associations with On The Buses if they've watched that, but I'm 31 and have never seen it. That goes for the majority of my friendship group as well.

Your DD isn't going to have a peer group who have watched a show that ended 40yrs before they were born so really wouldn't let that sway you.

Girlsthatdance · 31/07/2016 10:18

I can't believe you googled Olive from On the Buses and you are still considering using it as a child's name.

Girlsthatdance · 31/07/2016 10:20

And it's still on the tv. I saw listings for it this week.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 31/07/2016 10:23

Olive Oil
On The Buses
Popeye's girlfriend
Tapas

Really don't like it, sorry. However you're not me Smile

SueDunome · 31/07/2016 10:29

I know of two Olives; one is 10, the other 1. Nothing wrong with Martha or Mabel either.
