What are people's thoughts on Lola? I keep going hot and cold on it...

MrsLeigh Dolor means Pain and Dolores is the plural. Whether is a physical pain or an emotional pain like sorrow is not etymologically specified. You are right it means sorrow, but also pain, as sorrow is a pain of the soul.

As you can see from the RAE is has both meanings (link in Spanish but I take you speak it)

Lullah wouldn't be pronounced loola it would be lull-ah. Double L.
Lila and Layla are also as overused and dated as Lola.
Try picking a name that doesn't have two Ls in it, honestly

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/04/2016 07:33

No, you're incorrect Vince, I do actually know one in real life

If you prefer I can render it "lool-lah".

Try not being so patronising.

VinceNoirLovesHowardMoon · 19/04/2016 07:36

Just because the parents say it's pronounced loola doesn't change the fact that according to grammatical convention in the English language, lullah would be pronounced lull-ah.
You can say 'my child is called GVvjhcfy pronounced fred' if you like but it doesn't mean GVvjhcfy is pronounced Fred.

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/04/2016 07:51

Oh god you're one of those 🙄

It's a variant spelling of Lula.

GinIsIn · 19/04/2016 07:51

Lullah is indeed pronounced Loo-la. It's originally a shortening of Tallulah and I think the positioning LLs got reversed to stop the shortening starting with double L. It's not grammatically correct, as Vince oh so persistently points out, but it is in general use.

As an alternative to Lola, how about Lottie or Juno?

Grufalosfriend · 19/04/2016 13:36

I'm afraid I really dislike Lola, sorry. It sounds both transvestity/sexy and childish to my ears. It also doesn't sound very nice.

How about Louisa, Lucy or Lucinda?

gingerbreadmanm · 19/04/2016 13:40

oldlaundbooth · 19/04/2016 13:42

Abecedario · 19/04/2016 13:54

I really like it, but have taught an absolutely delightful Lola so it has positive connotations.

If you love it but have been put off then how about ...

Stella

Lottie
