What are people's thoughts on Lola? I keep going hot and cold on it...

It's a very popular name. There are 3 in my daughters class at school. I blame Charlie & Lola for the surge in popularity Wink

NewYearNewToads · 13/04/2016 01:02

I think it sounds like a hamster or a rabbit

Lulabells · 14/04/2016 19:31

My daughter is a Lola. I had her name picked years before we even thought about children. I LOVE it. I did worry about the transvestite/show girl association but that seems silly now. Plus me and DP love the Copacobana song Smile. We don't know any other Lola's here but a girl in her preschool is Loula which is also very pretty sounding and may be a good alternative for you. Smile

I love it. Really love it. But I didn't use it for DD as I thought everyone would laugh behind my back (dull straight laced family)

Summ3r · 15/04/2016 15:44

It was on our list as hubby loves it but I'm not too sure as I know a dog called Lola lol

OhPuddleducks · 15/04/2016 16:14

Am u the only one who hears Lola and thinks... Charlie?

eatmytoes888 · 15/04/2016 16:16

No really don't like it. Sounds like a stripper's name. Loula is cute though! Or Louella - met one recently and it really suited her!

KERALA1 · 15/04/2016 22:00

Awful. Baffled at popularity. Cannot imagine calling precious new born Lola. Transvestite stripper name.

Gummibaers · 15/04/2016 22:03

It's really awful, sorry.

SirVixofVixHall · 15/04/2016 22:04

"She looked like a woman but talked like a man oh my Lola". No. Just don't. It's either that or "she lost her looks and she lost her Tony then she LOST HER MIND" .

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 15/04/2016 22:06

One of my cats is called Lola.

Long whiskers, white paws, very pretty and dainty.

Hassled · 15/04/2016 22:07

There are a lot of Lolas out there, and I'm not even including the ones who taste just like cherry cola.

dimots · 15/04/2016 22:08

It's short for Dolores, as is Lolita. In the book Lolita her real name is Dolores and she is also known as Lola or Dolly.

NadiaWadia · 15/04/2016 22:51

I quite like it, but slightly more unusual alternatives could be Lila or Leila?

cornishglos · 16/04/2016 08:40

Diminutive of Dolores which means pain.

CoffeeCoffeeAndLotsOfIt · 16/04/2016 08:55

Lola - L O L A - Lola!

Wasn't the kinks song about a prostitute?

There's too many negative song links to the name for me to like it.

DavetheCat2001 · 17/04/2016 19:08

Beautiful name

DrunctioningFunk · 17/04/2016 19:28

Every other name at a softplay is a Lola, Layla, Lara.

I think it sounds ... almost too grown-up for a child, can't explain why, possibly the connotation with what the PPs have said.

Sorry :(

DerelictMyBalls · 18/04/2016 09:12

A most unfortunate name.

MissPronounced · 18/04/2016 14:23

I definitely agree with the 'showgirl' assessment, unfortunately.

I do know a Laura who goes by Lola (and she carries it off well), but that was her own choice later once she reached her late teens Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 18/04/2016 17:30

Transvestite or show girl.

Or French bulldog (my neighbour has a frenchie caled Lola).

Alisvolatpropiis · 18/04/2016 17:31

Lullah (loo-lah) is similarish alternative.

Evergreen17 · 18/04/2016 18:34

Lola is short for Dolores, which literally translated means Pains but it is really named after The Virgin of The Pains, so the one that takes care of people that are in pain.
This is just the origin of the name, you don't have to be religious to use it. It is a very traditional Spanish name and I think it is lovely.
A lot of traditional artists had that name and you can say Lolita as well Smile
Lolo is for a boy and it comes from Manolo.
Most Spanish names come from Virgins: Milagros, Dolores, Consuelo, Rosario (Rosa)... Or Saints: Pedro, Pablo, Jose...

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 18/04/2016 20:57

Dolores means sorrow, or grief. Not pain.

CrookedTiara · 18/04/2016 21:06

I'm firmly in the 'showgirl' camp, I'm afraid. I know two (very nice) young Lolas. One is the youngest of three sisters, who are called Scarlett, Delilah and Lola - which I suppose has the virtue of consistency. The other is one of four. The other three are named Edward, Harriet, Julian - and Lola.
