popularity of Violet?

I'm due a baby girl in July and have already decided on the name Violet. I keep googling and can't tell how popular it is? It seems to be in the top 100 but I've never known of any!

Have you met or do you know any little Violets? Would you say it's popular or not so? I don't mind but would prefer it if it wasn't too popular or on the rise! Thanks

Also do you think Mae is a good middle name?

I know one. I think it's lovely and not too popular.

It is apparently very annoying that most people don't say it with a T on the end though (I can verify this as the owner of a DS with a name that also ends in T!).

I know one teenage Violet but haven't met any others.

Violet is towards the bottom of the top 100 and there were only 754 Violets born in England and Wales last year. To put that in context there are more than 24000 schools in the UK so there's a very good chance that there won't be more than one Violet in her class - because there is more diversity in names these days, even the most popular names are shared by far fewer children than was the case in the 1970s and 1980s.

I think May and Mae are pretty but becoming almost default middle name choices (a bit like Grace and Rose), unless there's a family connection.

DaisyFranceLynch · 28/03/2016 20:55

I think Violet is a lovely name, btw.

nectarini1983 · 28/03/2016 20:56

I really like Violet

TipBoov · 28/03/2016 20:57

I only know one Violet, she's two. I think it's a lovely name.

NoCapes · 28/03/2016 20:57

Violet - yes
Mae - no!

soundsystem · 28/03/2016 21:00

I don't know any Violet's of any age. I think it's lovely. Not so keen on Mae, personally.

MrsS1990 · 28/03/2016 21:08

I don't know any. It's a lovely name. Don't use Mae rose or grace middle names though. They are just boring filler names now x

insancerre · 28/03/2016 21:13

I know 2 violets
One is 5 and the other is 4

Ilovenannyplum · 28/03/2016 21:17

Oh I love Violet, such a pretty name :) I've not come across one and I attend a lot of toddler groups with my 18 month old Smile

nellyflora · 28/03/2016 21:28

3 under 2

Friolero · 28/03/2016 21:32

I know one, aged 5.

Only1scoop · 28/03/2016 21:34

Love Violet
Mae is awful

buntymo · 28/03/2016 21:38

I know 2 violets and 1 Mae all under 8

jobrum · 28/03/2016 21:44

I have one! She's one. Never met another. Don't know that many children though so there could be loads out there I just don't know about.

Like the sound of Mae, not the spelling.

Sophronia · 28/03/2016 21:46

I like it in theory but when I say it it just sounds too close to 'violent'

DorothyBastard · 28/03/2016 21:47

I know a Violet aged 1

RockUnit · 28/03/2016 22:41

I have never met a Violet of any age.

PunkAssMoFo · 28/03/2016 23:08

Violet is lovely.
Mae is overdone.

TheNewStatesman · 29/03/2016 12:19

names.darkgreener.com/#violet

BIG increase in popularity in last few years, but still not that popular.

Thurlow · 29/03/2016 12:22

I know two, but we live in the kind of town that is awash with Violet, Florence, Matilda type names for girls. It's getting more popular, but definitely not too much. To be fair, there aren't even that many of the most popular names in most places - it's not like you get a class with 8 Amelia's in.

candykane25 · 29/03/2016 12:25

I know one, age 2

May is better than Mae, in my opinion.

Now this is a bit bonkers but Violet Blue popped into my head as a nice name combo. I blame MN.

lovelychops · 29/03/2016 12:28

Lovely name.

Agree with others who said Mae/may, grace and rose are boring filler middle names.

MamaLazarou · 29/03/2016 13:22

I have never met a Violet.

Mae is naff and overused, IMO.

starkers1 · 29/03/2016 15:38

OP am also settled on Violet for DDs arrival in a months time, and was also worried about the popularity. Its not even in the top 50 and when you look at stats its a few 100 baby Violet's each year, not 1000s like Amelia's or Ella's. Id say go for it, its beautiful.
