Male or female?

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 16/03/2016 22:22

If you were going to meet a person and you only knew their first name, would you assume they were male or female? (Person running a class, not dodgy Internet dating!)

Rowan
Riley
Bailey
Jody
Kelly
Piper
Morgan

Rowan = Boy - or girl (I know one of both!)
Riley - boy
Bailey - boy
Jody - girl (though perhaps that's when it's spelt with an ie)
Kelly - girl
Piper - girl
Morgan - boy

IoraRua · 16/03/2016 22:27

Rowan - girl
Riley - boy or American girl
Piper - girl
Bailey - could go either way
Jody - girl, definitely girl
Morgan - girl
Kelly - definitely a girl

SirVixofVixHall · 16/03/2016 22:28

Either
Either
Girl probably
Girl

Girl
Boy

SirVixofVixHall · 16/03/2016 22:29

I've never met a female Morgan- I'm Welsh, it is very much a man's name here.

Micah · 16/03/2016 22:30

I wouldnt assume male or female for any on that list. All pretty unisex.

Trills · 16/03/2016 22:38

Rowan - woman
Riley - man
Bailey - man
Jody - this is the only one where I'm less sure - I think Jodie is a woman, Jody I've never seen but could be a man.
Kelly - woman
Piper - woman
Morgan - man

If I were doing internet dating I would expect a picture that made it clear (and for my filters to have excluded some of them).

If they were running a class then unless it were a genitals-related class it wouldn't really matter.

SpeakNoWords · 16/03/2016 22:41

Rowan - would think either boy or girl, probably boy
Riley - boy
Bailey - boy
Jody - girl
Kelly - girl
Piper - girl
Morgan - boy

OneMagnumisneverenough · 16/03/2016 22:42

Rowan - I know at least one of each gender so wouldn't assume anything
Riley - I've never met any, would probably assume it was a male
Bailey - I know at least one of each gender so wouldn't assume anything
Jody - I've never met any, would probably assume it was a female although it looks like a male spelling.
Kelly - I know at least one of each gender so wouldn't assume anything
Piper - I know at least one of each gender so wouldn't assume anything
Morgan - I know at least one of each gender so wouldn't assume anything

I also know a male Brooke and Kerry but more girls with assumed male names, e.g. Jamie, Dale etc. and then there is all the Sam, Joe/Jo, Alex etc names.

mrsschu · 16/03/2016 22:46

I'd think Jody, Kelly and Piper were girls and the rest boys.

Rowan - boy
Riley - either
Bailey - I know 4 dogs with this name but no humans. Not entirely sure as to sex of 2 dogs but 2 are boys
Jody - either
Kelly - girl (on odds - I know one man Kelly and 48000 women ones)
Piper - girl
Morgan - either

tbh, the only one I would be confident about would be Piper.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 16/03/2016 23:11

Rowan. Both, but more boy.
Rielly. Same as above
Bailey. Girl
Jody. Girl. Although I know of a male Jody.
Kelly. Girl
Piper. Girl
Morgan. Both but would sway more to a girl.

AuntieStella · 16/03/2016 23:12

Rowan - either
Riley - boy
Bailey - boy
Jody - more likely to be girl but unsurprised if boy (the only one I know who spells with a 'y' is a young man)
Kelly - girl
Piper - American girl
Morgan - boy

Heebiejeebie · 16/03/2016 23:17

Rowan almost certainly girl
Riley prob boy
Bailey prob boy
Jody definitely girl
Kelly almost certainly girl
Piper girl
Morgan either

Heebiejeebie · 16/03/2016 23:18

Girl's an odd word, isn't it?

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/03/2016 23:20

Rowan - either
Riley - boy
Bailey - boy
Jody - girl
Kelly - girl
Piper - girl
Morgan - boy

TheFear · 16/03/2016 23:21

Piper is the only one I'd assume about, that would be girl

WelliesTheyAreWonderful · 16/03/2016 23:22

Rowan - boy
Riley - boy or girl
Bailey - boy or girl
Jody - girl
Kelly - girl
Piper - girl
Morgan - girl

Sophronia · 16/03/2016 23:26

Rowan - either
Riley - boy
Bailey - boy
Jody - either
Kelly - girl
Piper - girl
Morgan - boy

BackforGood · 16/03/2016 23:39

Rowan - boy (although I know it does sometimes get used for a girl)
Riley - boy
Bailey - boy (although, again, I've come across both)
Jody - tricky, as I'd expect it to say Jodie, so, if being creative with the spelling then might think it "original" to give to a boy??
Kelly - girl
Piper - potato or musician
Morgan - boy

Are you going to report back as to which they actually are?

Lightbulbon · 16/03/2016 23:58

Rowan prob boy
Riley boy, if young child poss girl ESP if American
Bailey boy
Jody girl if ie spelling, poss boy if y
Kelly girl unless Irish
Piper always a girl
Morgan 50/50

TippyTappyLappyToppy · 17/03/2016 00:08

Rowan - could go either way
Riley - UK would assume a boy, unless it was a small baby as recently people seem to be picking up on the American trend of using it for a girl.
Bailey - I know a 21 yo Bailey who is female but mostly they seem to be little boys
Jody - girl, (but usually spelt Jodie) although I do know a boy Jody
Kelly - girl.
Piper - girl. Have never heard of a male Piper
Morgan - girl, although I do know a boy Morgan

Canyouforgiveher · 17/03/2016 00:12

Rowan
Riley
Bailey
Jody
Kelly
Piper
Morgan

I know male and female of both except for Piper (female only) and Morgan (male only).

I live in the US so I would probably presume Rowan, Riley, Bailey, Jody and Kelly were all female because surnames as first names/boys names as girls names are very popular here - although I do know males in the US with those names.

I also know a male Cameron who ended up in a relationship with a female Cameron. That was a bit odd.

joyfulworld · 17/03/2016 07:40

Rowan- boy
Riley- either
Bailey- boy
Jody- girl
Kelly- girl
Piper- girl
Morgan - girl
