We live in the new forest and there is a well
known monument called the Rufus Stone here. Locally it's well known but would you make the association if you weren't from around here?
I love the nn Roo and Reuben and Rupert don't do it it for me, Rufus is such a beautiful name and I'm beginning to wonder why on earth I married someone with such a bloody generic surname!
Tell me can we do this to our son? I didn't even remember it was a place until a friend pointed it out.

Never heard of it.
And I lived 10 minutes from the New Forest for 12 years!

Sophronia · 03/03/2016 22:54

Never heard of it

TwoLittleBlooms · 03/03/2016 23:31

Never heard of it. Rufus Stone is an awesome name!

nellyflora · 04/03/2016 12:10

Im in Winchester and know the new forest well. Only vagly remembered Rufus stone. Honestly wouldn't have thought a thing of it even if I walked past it daily. Just use the name!

Pigeonpost · 04/03/2016 15:56

Never heard of it. The Tristan Stone is just up the road from us. I can't remember whether you mentioned Rupert in your OP as an alternative?

Pigeonpost · 04/03/2016 15:56

You did Blush, ignore that last part of my post...

SteggySawUs · 04/03/2016 16:03

We used to drive past the sign to Rufus stone every summer on the way to holiday and a friend ended up being given it as a nickname in a rather non complimentary way, so I'm afraid I have heard of it and can only say it in a comedy voice, sorry! I wouldn't use that name if you're local to it.

SoupDragon · 04/03/2016 16:11

Never heard of it.

kaymondo · 04/03/2016 17:45

I've never heard of it - and Rufus is on our short list for DS3, great name!

5madthings · 04/03/2016 17:47

Never heard of it, love the name rufus, it was on our list for Ds4 but we went for rudi in the end.

CormoranStrike · 04/03/2016 19:48

I love the name Rufus

MamaLazarou · 04/03/2016 21:55

Rufus Stone is an excellent name.

JudgeJudySheindlin · 04/03/2016 22:20

I'm not keen on the name at the moment but tomorrow I might like it. I guess I'm saying I change my opinion a lot about Rufus.

I would see the connection with Rufus Stone as its one of those cool place names I always recalled from trips down to Dorset. I don't think it matters if there's a connection unless you live in Rufus StoneGrin

sashenka · 05/03/2016 15:47

I do love Rufus, but maybe living close to the new forest it could be an awkward name? Rupert could be a lovely alternative Smile

ClashCityRocker · 05/03/2016 15:51

I like the name, but proximity to a local landmark could be an issue.

I'm thinking kind of like someone called Clifford Tower in York.

Shemozzle · 05/03/2016 16:03

Never heard of the stone. We were convinced dd2 was a boy and we chose Rufus as a name and called my bump Rufus for most of the pregnancy. I love it so much. Then I made friends with someone who had a son the same she called Rufus, so I couldn't use it anymore. I don't think it's strange at all.

Shemozzle · 05/03/2016 16:04

The same age*

cece · 05/03/2016 16:07

I've never heard of it.

I think you could have a lot of fun with Stone as a surname.

Mason Stone

Red Stone

Blue Stone

Hardy Stone

Rocky Stone

Sandy Stone

Brim Stone

Gray Stone

Shemozzle · 05/03/2016 16:08

Sorry I didn't see you saying your surname was stone but others have mentioned that?

ATailofTwoKitties · 05/03/2016 16:09

You missed out Rosetta, cece. Rufus and Rosetta Stone would be a fab sibset.

Or how about Flint?

cece · 06/03/2016 00:11

MitzyLeFrouf · 06/03/2016 00:36

Rufus Stone is a badass name. He'll grow up to be a hot and handsome heartbreaking private eye.

KatOnATinRo0f · 06/03/2016 15:30

I live here too. I drive past it regularly (or the sign for it. I may never have been there? School trip maybe?) I wouldn't have a problem with the name at all. It's lovely. Go for it.

KatOnATinRo0f · 06/03/2016 15:32

I knew a boy called Jacques Daniels.... Now why would you do that?
