We live in the new forest and there is a well
known monument called the Rufus Stone here. Locally it's well known but would you make the association if you weren't from around here?
I love the nn Roo and Reuben and Rupert don't do it it for me, Rufus is such a beautiful name and I'm beginning to wonder why on earth I married someone with such a bloody generic surname!
Tell me can we do this to our son? I didn't even remember it was a place until a friend pointed it out.

I would but it's cool

OneMagnumisneverenough · 06/03/2016 17:35

I've heard of it (I'm in Scotland and never been to the NF) but other than thinking that the name reminded me of something, I think it would have taken me a long time to figure out what without googling so I wouldn't let that bother me.

As an alternative have you thought of Ruaridh for the nickname Roo/Ru?

PeterRabbitt · 06/03/2016 18:10

I am desperate to use Ruaridh but my husband thinks he'll spend his life telling people how to spell/pronounce it.
We do have another son with an 'us' ending Scottish name so that is working against us as well Confused

Nope, never heard of it. I have heard of the holy stone of Clonrichert though.
Rufous Stone is a great name.

Angus and Rufus Stone are definitely brothers who fight crime.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 06/03/2016 18:24

My son has a gaelic spelled name and not one of the usual ones, he really doesn't mind and actually quite likes it being a bit different. So I wouldn't let the spelling/pronouncing thing be an issue.

SallyGardens · 06/03/2016 18:27

I have a Ruairí, nn Roo. I am in Ireland but even here, people struggle with the spelling and pronounciation (usually saying Rory instead of Roo-ree).

PeterRabbitt · 06/03/2016 18:32

You got me Trills Wink

Rufus is a nice name. I've never heard of Rufus Stone

With the surname Stone I'd avoid names like Flynn and May (Flintstones, Maidstone) .

YoScience · 06/03/2016 18:41

I really like rufus. Never heard of the stone.

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 06/03/2016 18:43

I can't believe no one's mentioned Rufus Hound as he's the first thing I think of when I hear Rufus, despite knowing of the stone.

I do imagine his facial hair on the baby when I think of him actually!

I went to school with a lad called Solomon Ireland and nobody seemed to make the connection with the Solomon Islands. I think when it's a child's name you just associate it with the child. I agree it is a superlative name!

AlmaMartyr · 06/03/2016 19:29

I've never heard of the Rufus Stone. Cool name!

KatieT12 · 06/03/2016 20:58

Never heard of it

LetMeBakeCake · 06/03/2016 21:03

I'm originally from the New Forest and never heard of it!
Great name go for it!

Pigeonpost · 06/03/2016 21:41
